My 230 SLK is sick. MB say I need a new wiring loom and ecu as they are coontaminated with oil that has come from an oil leak on a part at the front of the engine (I can't remember the name of the part that's leaking). That's gonna take 10 hours to fix apparently

My question is this: How much damage can the oil have done? Will it be possible to fix the leak and clean up the oil (at a good indipendent!) without having to replace the parts? The car runs ok now.

Matt.

This will be the camshaft sensor wiring harness, the harness and the ECU can be washed and re used, some firms insist on changing the harness. the mod is only a simple adapter.

Thanks Malcolm, that's what I was hoping. You're right as well - it's the camshaft sensor that they said was leaking (a magnet in there?).

I'll take the car to an indie and see if they'll clean things up for me.

Even if you do agree to have the loom replaced, you could have it done at an indy.
Go to a good indy, they will already know of the issue and so will be familiar with doing the work.
I didn't realise it was a 10 hour job though!!

Good luck with it.

Its not a 10 hour job. 3.5 -4 maxixmum.

It is best to get a new loom. Washing is "ok" but not ideal.

Since the oil is pushed up between the copper wire and the plastic outer covering it must be good practice to do what Ollie does for the long term, and replace the loom.

Anyone have the "part" number for the adaptor plug?

Cheers Bazzle

Yep, I'm going for the new loom and trying to save the ECU and see how it goes.

The dealers said I'd need a new air mass flow meter as well - would that tie up with what's expected to go wrong when this fault occurs?

I'm booked in for the new year at a specialist in SW London who's quoted a better price. I'll post back when it's done for anyone that's interested.

Yes It can also seep into the Air mass.

seems to me that you have the same issue that i am currently dealing with, so far i have changed both lambda sensors, airmass, mot valve, another valve, crankshaft sensor, camshaft acutator/magnet and the extra wiring loom with a new engine wiring loom, to find out there has been no diffrence, The ecu has been sent off but was told that there is no fault, so i need to reset the adaptations and that should sort out the problem, as the car goes in to a default mode! the ecu can be washed using a high grade solvent and should not cause too much of an issue, let me now how you get on.
most if not all of the work i have done myself in under a day and have saved hundreds in labour costs mercs wanted an hour labour to change each lambda sensor!
merry xmas

I have found that my SLK230 1998 has round terminals on the camshaft connector so the above listed adaptor wont fit.
Has any one seen one for this model?

MB says they only have the one?

Hi merc man, I'd love to be able to fit the new parts myself but, apart from not having the skill, I don't have anywhere to work :(

I hope yours is sorted now and thanks for the list of things that might also be needed on mine (shame it's so long!). I'll let you know how mine goes...

Sorted!

I'm just posting an update on my wiring loom issue in case it helps anyone in the future...My SLK was booked in to James Leigh in Wimbledon on Wednesday. I've picked it up this morning and all seems well again :)

The garage has replaced the leaking cam sensor with the modified part, replaced the engine wiring loom and cleaned up the other parts that were contaminated with oil from the loom (ECU was especially oily apparently).

The Engine warning light is off and the car's running fine :) The garage owner has warned that there's a possibility that the engine warning light may come back on due to any remaining oil contamination - at which point he'll change the offending part without incurring any more diagnostics charges. But fingers crossed it'll be ok.

The bill was a shade over £1k. That sounds a lot but was 3 times less than the dealer wanted and included new front disks, pads, front swivel joints and MOT which obviously had nothing to do with the wiring loom problem.

I'm very happy with the indy and will be posting a recommendation in the garages section.

Thanks for the posters that commented on this thread as well!

good to hear that the problem is resolved, i had mine in today, didnt cost me too much just under £60 with a 20% labour discount.

Mercedes croydon had a tech guy from another branch waiting for me, i explained the fault and the running problems and showed him what i had changed ect, he tried the adaptations but it still did not resolve the issue, it came up with the same faults which were generic for the car. but as all the parts were new and there was no issue wioth the coding he decided to check some fuses, upon inspection he located a 15amp fuse, on the front fuse box which was blown, it is linked to the front sam and the loom it feeds, he changed it and then reset the fault codes and was then able to do the adaptations, ran the car round the compund and then checked all the live data, and it was all functioning as it should, he did a few other tests, emmitions and checked a few other bits on the star and problem solved!!! He went on to conclude that after the loom is changed that the fuse should also be changed/checked due to the shorting of the loom, thats why the computer could not do the adaptations, other than that the car is running really good and fuel consumption is ALOT better as i drove it about for a good hour and the computer showed 24mpg as opposed to 6-10mpg!

now i just have to find the cause of the instability and ill be one happy merc owner!

Is the camshaft sensor fitted a modified one ?....Id so does this problem occur on the C23ok W202 engineaswell and is it worth changing to the modified one as a precaution ?

The camshaft actuator and magnet is the same as the old one, the only modifyed part is the extra part, whihc is an extra/extention loom that fits on to the main wiring loom and the connector of the camshaft, that stops the flow of oil and the associated problems.

Ok thanks - so what do I ask for on the 230k W202 when I go to the dealers - Id rather get whatever part i need to modify this now rather than wait for a possible problem.
