Oil leak

I am hoping someone will be able to help me with a little oil leak problem I am having with my wife’s W204 C250 MY11 60k.
I recently changed the oil and filters as usual. Measured and replaced with exact quantity of new oil using; Fuchs TITAN GT1 PRO FLEX XTL 5W-30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil and a BOSCH Element Oil Filter F026407112.

On initial inspection it appears to be leaking around the top of the engine under the plastic cover. There is evidence of oil spray around the oil fill cap and a lot of oil sitting in the channels around the top of the engine and on the fuel rail.

I need to run the car to see if I can diagnose where this is spraying for but it has lost more than half it’s oil over 3weeks and there is oil all over the drive and road..

Is there anything oilwise around the top of the engine that is prone to this type of failure?

Many thanks in advance,

Regards, Neil

Is there anything that I could have done to the filter that could have blocked the oil system?

The first oil change I did on my W211 E220 cdi resulted in an oil leak much like you describe. It turned out to be a miss-fitted oil filler cap (my bad!). I must have done hundreds of oil changes over the years and never encountered this.
Anyhow, after removing the engine covers and much mopping and cleaning, then ensuring both tangs on the filler cap were correctly engaged all was well.

Gave it a good clean up today, seems to be leaking from the cap.
Can they fail? Or is there something else that can cause a pressure build up for this to happen?

Blocked breathers will cause excess pressure. It is worth pulling and checking them. Apologies I do not know your engine. Your cap may need replacing. They are not expensive from MB.

It seems a bit coincidental that this has occurred since the oil change but maybe just my suspicious nature. This may sound odd but I felt that the cap fitted more positively onto the filler neck when the logo on the cap was the "right way round" i.e. when viewed from the front of the car. I know it seems to be symmetrical and probably is but I make sure mine goes back this way and no problems since.
As Bruce says, new caps are available from MB fairly cheaply and would at least eliminate it as a culprit.

On the principle that this fault occured after you fitted the oil filter and changed the oil its seems logical to exclude a problem with the filter by changing it for another. I would fit a pucka MB filter this time. If you overfilled with oil this might also have caused any crankcase breathers to choke-- you did only fill to around 2/3-3/4 of the full level on the dipstick and not to the full level with cold oil didn't you?

Hi ZZZUBBB, any updates/resolution to your problem?
