Oil leak :(

My car is leaking oil. It's booked in for Monday and I have a MB used car warranty. At the stealers yesterday the guy seemed to think it would be a warranty claim.

However, what happens with all the oil that's already in there? It had an A-service 2 months ago (different stealer) so I be very p***ed off if i'm expected to cough up for another load of new oil.

Any thoughts or advice on what i should do before monday?

cheers,
simon

I would expect the warranty to cover the oil loss? Its like putting in new wheel bearings,Imagine if they didn't grease them!

My understanding is that the warranty will cover replacement of consumables if the requirement is a direct result of the fault.

They probably won't drain the oil though unless it's the sump gasket or oil level sensor leaking.

dropped the car off today ready for monday and they fixed it today :)

it was the Crankshaft Oil Seal which, you've guessed it, isn't covered by my MB warranty. Anyway, if any of you happen to swing by the edinburgh stealers later today, I'll be the one in the corner getting humped! :(

I had exactly the same oil leak .. it was covered by the Signature warranty. However, they fixed it, it leaked again, just after the warranty ended. Then they discovered it was something much more serious, and admitted that they did not do a proper job the first time round. After 2 weeks of messing me around (they had my car all that time and had no courtesy cars), they (the service manager, who eventually answered my calls after I said I was going to come in and demand to see the MD) agreed to do it properly.

They were choking because total labour second time round was 55 hours!! They had my car for another week. Parts cost was about £400 excl VAT. Car's fine now and I got a 'free' overhaul.

Press harder on the warranty. Oil leaks are as clearly an engine problem if there ever was one.

I just phoned the warranty company and the part is covered.  oh this is going to be fun!

as I remember it, the reason why the crankshaft seal leaks is because of excessive pressure on it -- so the real fault is rarely the seal but some other problem causing the seal to fail. Look around the entire engine to make sure there is no other oil leaking anywhere. ask them why the crankshaft seal leaked.

cheers for the advice.

the more i think about this now, the more annoyed i am. it took me all of 5 mins (simple phonecall) to find out myself that it was covered. i guess that's what i should've done in the first place. lesson learnt.

Err, should that be "getting the hump"?? Around my way, your statement has different connotations and would certainly interest the News of the World.

;)

I took it the same way Flyer, but thought that was what he meant!

I am led to believe this is a common Scottish pastime unrelated to things of an unsavory nature :D

But Simon's a Rochdale lad, untainted by the ways of the Scots ... or is it too late for you, Simon? :p

i think you will find this seal is prone to fail if too much oil has been added and not removed fast enough

errrm in my world (which is very different to the news of the world) the phrase can have two meanings. but i'll take the less unsavory option please. :)

am afraid 6 years is just too long to stay 100% pure rochdale-alien. once you've had yer first bottle of buckie, that's you. :p

It makes one wonder if the dealer was going to charge you and then the warranty company!

my car is now fixed. i was told it was fixed on friday....but it wasn't

i pushed on the warranty issue and it's now free so BIG BIG thanks to "C240Sport97". have a banana :bannana: . somehow i doubt i'll be getting red carpet treatment when i collect it later. :p

oh well, wonder what'll break next!

thanks!

Check the crankshaft seal at least monthly to make sure the problem has not recurred. Also keep the invoice for the warranty work (you need to sign it before they send it off to the warranty people). You may need this to show them they did the work (I did), if it leaks again.

I thought the Mercedes Signiture Warranty was comprehensive and covered just about eveything, besdies tyres etc which is understandable.

it is, but it relies on the dealership phoning the warranty dept to check the fault is covered
