OM606 turbo in a Bentley

God i hate that noise !!

Not sure I should be encouraging you!

Maintenance was reasonable as long as you use an Indy. Bodywork of my period (86) prone to rusty wings (not as bad as Mercs!) and not any more expensive than any other bodywork. There is a lot that can go wrong with things - hydraulics etc, but the engine is pretty unstressed. Mine broke down once when I ignored the aircon compressor playing up, which then shorted. Easily fixed by the RAC, apart from that, no great problems, just buy the ones that have been well looked after, have it inspected, a lot of people try and run one on an inadequate budget and think the quality of the car will mean it needs little servicing - the fatter the file, the better (within reason).

They are imposing cars, very heavy - don't be fooled by my long distance mpg, around town 4mpg was normal! Built by hand with a body that flexes, they do creak a lot. My insurance (garaged, second car, classic) was peanuts for the type of car.

I would go for one post 90 - build quality definitely better, a four speed kind of useful.

Thanks for the pointers. I remember some flexing in the body of the car when I have been a passenger - was demonstrated to me by revving whilst stationary in neutral too.

Anyway I'd better get saving up, prices seems not to have dropped from when I last looked a few years ago, if anything the nicer examples seem to be appreciating.

Cheers,

James

Timeless.

God I'd love to waft down to the mother in law in the South of France in that!

Seems a bargain in comparison to say a new Focus at £12,995.

3 years time the Focus is worth say £5k and the Bentley perhaps much the same or more?!

So taking into account servicing and everything even 15mpg and not 35mpg is no great shakes...

Plus the unending feel good factor!!

Well, whoever has had that has stuck religiously to the service schedule - 6000 miles or each year, if less, although the work done should be checked against schedule and a good Indy may recommend certain items don't need replacement even if the schedule does.

That is a very good sign as a lot of the perishable items (brake hoses etc) are time rather than mileage specific.

Prices for these should all be taken with a pinch of salt. A friend had a coupe on the market for ages (in prime condition) and got not a bite for months. Always worth a haggle.

The Continental Coupe is very special, its on my lottery list.

I don't refer to the VW Phaeton 2 Door Coupe driven by thick footballers!!!!!

Excellent find Paul.

Amazing really that there is quite a lot of junk around the £10k mark- early tatty examples with dodgy looking paintwork and missing history. Cars that you would literally have to spend the same again to get them anywhere near how you would want.

Something like that 1993 Bentley is clearly in a completely different league and yet pretty much the same price.

It gets you thinking and for £12k!! I think its a great weekend waft and if purchased with ones eyes open, it can be a rewarding acquisition. Also remember to have the garage widened :D

I think they are quite quick too IIRC 0-60 6.9secs top speed 140mph on the later models.

You sure?!!!I think the GT was the ugliest car Bentley ever made

I think Paul means this one Dash - the Continental R or T (the one he likes):

Continental R

rather than the VW Phaeton with badges and good leather - the GT

Footballer Special

which he (and I and you) doesn't like.
