Hi everyone, I'm new here.

I have a 2010 E350 CDI with the om642 engine which for the last year has driven flawlessly, until last week when the MIL light has come on after a run down a dual carriage, on reading the codes I have been returned with 2 fault codes P2009 and P1215(00), it has also popped fuse 24 in the engine bay fuse board, but not every time.

Has anyone here had this issue and possibly know what the course could be, as research has show many possible culprits that could course fuse 24 to blow.

Thank you in advance for any advice and help.

Jammed swirl flap rods or the motor is soaked in oil. ??

Thank you, I did wonder if it was swirl flap related. then the next question is would intake manifold on bank 1 would need to be removed to gain access to the motor?

No , just remove the batwing maf , it's directly under the turbo.

You could just do the resistor mod and see if your issues go away .

Think I read about that. Can you remember it by any chance worth a try

You will lose out on throttle response and low end torque - where the engine spends most of its time. And increase the risk of choking the DPF. If swirlflaps weren't needed, MB would have saved cash and not bothered. Your car to **** up though.

I am a mechanic, but am not familiar with the OM642, before the E350 I owned a Octavia VRS Blackline. I'm not looking to drive the car with the swirl flaps bypassed but to use it to diagnose that it is within the swirl flap system.

I locked the swirl flaps open on my 159 to minimise risk of a common failure where they get sucked into the engine.....could not feel any difference at all a before or after. Its more for emission than low down torque. I think the difference in torque on most engines is minute. Others opinion and experience may differ!!

I drove my e320cdi for a while with the resistor in and it was not the same, as bellow mentioned throttle response wasn't there and low end power was lacking, ended up fitting a new motor and if I remember rightly the turbo had to be removed along with fuel filter and some other bits and pieces, not that difficult a job really.

Just for balance I’ve had the resistor in for 40,000 miles and 5 years ish .
Throttle response unchanged (it was a bit delayed until I fitted another actuator, but I’m guessing that slack in the actuator was the cause of that )
Low done power , it’s still a monster .
Very light increased engine braking when you come off the accelerator…maybe ?

Did the same and had it for around 45K miles and 9 years - no issues. Agree about the actuator as well, they do seem to go off eventually - mine was at 130K miles. Now done 170Kmiles and just passed MOT with perfect emissions output.

Right I can confirm Merc has a bad swirl flap motor

Does anyone happen to know what the part number for the swirl flap motor is. So I can get one order please.
I can definitely confirm it is the swirl flap motor that has failed, because after doing the resistor bypass to check. Engine MIL has gone out and the boost is back.
Thank you

Contact MB Newcastle on their eBay page , they will send you the correct one .

Are the flap rods moving freely ??

Not sure if you can move them with everything in situ , but if they are broken or jammed , they'll need sorting at the same time . Removing the old motor should give you answers I guess.

Fyi, the 642 engine used on sprinter vans, in America, don’t have swirl flaps at all, so read into that what you want. 🤷‍♂️

FWIW ... the OM642 was de-rated to 187 bhp in all Sprinters. It had 204 bhp and then 224 bhp in the W639 Vito, although all of them had the same torque figure of 440 Nm.

For those who don't know, the last two digits of van model numbers are the first two digits of the power output in PS! Hence the V6 Vitos were '120' and then '122' and all V6 Sprinter models ended with '19'.
