W211 280 CDi -OM642- Engine
Hi, I just changed the engine oil on my W211 OM642. On re filling it took over 9 litres ( around 9.1/4) , I believed this engine held 8.5 L. I checked for leaks and its all dry as a bone , the dipstick oil is correctly right up to, and below the MAX mark. There is no oil burning either and the engine is very healthy.

I lost my vehicle booklet so cant look it up, some sites on the internet state these engines actually hold 9 litres which would make more sense. Anyway it seems fine , but I would like to know for future.

Thank you

Have you checked the oil level hot after the engine has been stopped for 15 minutes?

Yes, I drove it for 15 mins then stopped and waited on level ground for another 15 mins. I checked it many times and it showed two thirds up dipstick, one side of dipstick was covered in oil all the way up, but I think that's from taking it in and out repeatedly. Thank you

I think the book says 7.5-8.5L to fill depending on where it is on the dispstick , but like you I’m sure I’ve put more in because I like the oil level on hot to be near maximum.
I wouldn’t give it another thought if the level is showing up correct

Yes thanks, I think they give a dash warning if it is over filled and stressed , I used to be in ambulance service and we had the same engines in the sprinters and people were always putting too much oil in them. A overfill warning came up. If that happens I will suction some out. Thanks for reply 🙂

7.5 is the safer option. As you'll maybe have 1/2 a litre lurking about inside engine bits .

I will take her out today and see how it goes, check when I get home. Thank you 🙂
When I overfilled mine I got a dash warning at speeds about 60/70 mph .but this was on a straight 6 with oil level sensor , no dipstick. 8 litres is what most 0m642 engines hold . You maybe will get a pressure warning or the engine will implode at speed . Good luck.

I always use a jug now for the last few litres after pouring in a 5 canister and count the litres in , dipstick or not.

A good tip with the om642 engine is to put some of the new oil through the oil filter housing , it’s something to do with the engine layout

Realistically I’ve never had more than 7-7.5L out using dipstick method or from under the car!

Yes I learnt that on YouTube, I did that

Thanks for that info, I fear I have 9.5 L in mine 😱😨 , I may suck some out. I thought it was 8.5 L.. I don't want to blow my oil cooler seals, that would be a nightmare. My car would then need to visit the wonderful Alex Crow to be fixed.

I'd be more fearful for the crankshaft ventilation pipe sucking excess oil and detonation of the engine.

I read that , it's to have engine oil at the top on first start up. Same thing the non return valve does in the filter housing.

My early w211 would take all the engine oil via this method . It was easier a hole to hit on the L6.
