So I have a glow plug fault but pretty sure the plugs are OK as I changed them for mb original 30 k ago. The flow plug controller has a metal plate which makes me think that could be faulty and is the older variant? So with this in mind, where should I purchase the controller since mb want 250 quid!!!!

Take the part number and search online.

The factory glowplugs on my OM642 started failing at 35k miles, so it's not inconceivable that one of the ones you fitted 30k miles ago has gone. If there's no fault code for a specific plug (or plugs) then maybe it is the controller, or the 225A 'mega fuse' for the whole glowplug circuit. Obviously in either case you'd have no plugs working so the engine would be cranking longer than usual in cold weather. But do some diagnostics before starting to replace things.

When I needed a controller 18 months or so ago they weren't available from MB anyway. I managed to find a "used" one at a dealership that had ordered it in for another vehicle but never fitted it.

No idea if there are any non-MB options for the controller or fuse - somebody else may be able to advise.

The Metal Plate one is the old version, I changed mine two years ago, it was a Beru and I got it mail order from SPR.
The signs a dodgey relay will give are normally. The light will go out and come back on again, and then go back out a while later.
Eventually, it goes out then comes back on. I took a chance ( it could have been the Glow Plugs) and just changed it, and it cured the problem.

Old and new OEM controllers , old one is on the left surprisingly.

Yup with most Mercs (AFAIK) any failed plug causes the light to stay on for a while after starting and then go off. With the failed controller on mine the light went out after starting (as normal) but would then come on sometimes while driving, staying on for maybe a minute and then going off. FWIW :)

I just noticed you opened two identical threads for this and are getting replies in both

Maybe an admin. can merge them ...

Thanks for all the replies. I get a slight vibration sometimes in the morning when starting the car but nothing else. Actually one other problem I also experience is significantly longer crank if I don't wait a few seconds before switching the engine on. I got the error codes from my diag equipment. I wouldn't of have known anything wrong otherwise. I'll do some diagnostics before buying parts.
