As already mentioned, the actual presence of a cat is not legally required but your car's emmisions will be tested as if a cat was present and i personally doubt that it will pass the emmisions test without the cat.
Putting it back on once a year would be your only option i'm afraid.
People talk about emissions but am I correct in thinking that the standard a car needs to meet on an MOT is more lenient that the car must meet when manufactured?
I now understand (learnt through the forum) you don't NEED the cat to pass, as above said down to emissions.
What route you take is proably down to your cash and who is doing the work (I figure more than one attempt always going to cost more):
1, You could try a complete decat with some "test pipes" and see how the emissions are.
or
2. Go with higher flow cats.
I believe the resistance (for want of correct term) is measure in CPI (cells per inch).
Identify what CPI your cats are and reduce them.
On the Audi my precats (2) were 200CPI and my primary cats (2) 400CPI. I removed the precats and had 200CPI primary cats fitted (happended to easily be sourced from an RS model).
You can get 100 CPI cats which will still get you emissions low enough but they are expensive and noisier.
I'd investigate loosing precats and going for a lower CPI rated primary cats.
