First high speed tyre loss for a long time today - nearside rear popped I think after running over something on the road, at "motorway speeds" (>69mph...)

Good to have a decent stiff chassis sometimes - tyre rapidly deflated but absolutely no effect other than noise through the car, was 4 up with a full boot as well, no judder or pull, just cruised into the next layby (on the A15 between the Humber bridge and Barnetby top).

Good bit of design on Mercedes behalf - firstly you don't have to completely empty the boot to get the spare out, and secondly gloves are provided in the tool kit.

Despite the delay and subsequent reduction in speed due to the skinny spare still made it to Damon's in time for our table...

Pleased that it all went well, we have come a long way on tyres and wheel and suspension set ups in the last 10 years. When a front blew out on the V70R nothing really happened ans only the embarrassment of having to pull over having just overtaking a line of cars.

Gloves ??? thats not fair you only get one with the SL:):)

It was commented that I got overtaken a lot more with the skinny than normal.

As for the gloves, do SLs come with a spare wheel? You only need one glove to use the tyrefix thing don't you?

The SLs come with a blow up spare wheel, the AMGs have no spare wheel, and thats like the S class

What is it like driving on a skinny wheel, no one has ever mentioned then for driving.

How bad was your tyre that blew out, well worn or just normal

Driving on the skinny is pretty bad, had to do it from Solihull a few months ago as well - not nice as the profile makes it rock in a crosswind - not as bad today.

Cold and wet last time too, ESP light flashing a lot when pulling away but winter mode sorts that out. Again today in the "summer" temperatures not as bad.

Tyre is about 1/2 worn, only went on in January (just checked my records) - spoken to my tyre fitter (emailed him 10 mins ago and his wife rang me just now) and they're gonna come and put a new one on in the morning - works for me I'll work from home and reschedule my day around it.

Nice round hole in the tread, so must have hit something pretty sharp - will look properly when the tyre is off the rim.

Glad you and yours are OK Tim. :) Did the kids think it was "cool"?

Is it possible to replace the skinny spare tyre with a full size spare or will it not fit in the provided space?

This is the problem on many cars, the spare on the SL is one of the fold flat on a skinny rim and just goes in the hole, and on many cars this is the case.

I believe that MB's view on this is that if you are out and have a puncture, then call out the MB guys to fix it for you

Anybody heard of "Tyron bands"

I'd forgotten this bit on their website, pretty impressive considering a tyre blowout at half that speed will often cause a rollover
CARAVAN
Standard Sprite Musketeer. Laden to Maximum Gross Weight. No stabiliser fitted. Ford Cosworth (460bhp). Standard suspension.

Test Track: Bruntingthorpe Test Track, Leicestershire.
Vehicles fitted with Tyron wheel safety bands.

The caravan tyre was detonated at 113.3mph (recorded by RAC timekeepers) and speed maintained over half mile. The outfit was turned at the end of the track to repeat the run at an average speed of approximately 100mph. On the same tyre simulated 'snaking' trials were performed at 60mph. Then from 70mph an emergency stop was executed, into a coned 'box' approximately 1 metre (3') wider than the caravan. At the completion of all tests the caravan wheel was totally undamaged. No damage had been sustained by the caravan's wheel arch, wheelbox or trim.
I have to confess that on odd occasions my speed might stray fractionally above the 60 mph limit when towing on the motorway, so I figured that Tyron bands might be a good investment.

Thanks for your reply. I thought with Mobilo they would come out and change the wheel. Are you saying that they have the capacity to mend a puncture for you at the roadside??

They seem to and could well have the facilities in the rear, perhaps some else an come in here with an answer.

If you have no spare wheel there is no other way

Is it not the case that if the car is over 2 or 3 years old, Mobilo will charge for attending a punctured tyre?

I believe under Mobilo Life it is for 2 years. Under the upcoming Mobilo scheme I belive it is for 4 years.

It's a nice thing with the W211 that the well is big enough for the full size (in fact probably for a larger than standard wheel) wheel when the skinny is out.

On a slight tangent - noticed a plume of dust on the other carriageway of the M4 (J16-17) this evening. Then spotted a big lorry tyre carcass in the centre lane and lorry hearding for the hard sholder in the rear view mirror. Luckily motorway wasn't too dense at the time, but there was a lot of debris and the main carcass was a sizeable lump. Did my bit and phoned the local traffic line - hope no one hit it before the HATOs arrived.

I'm so pleased to hear your okay and thankfully total blow-outs are not too common.

Well done

Regards
John
