Overtakes me then slows down

Seriously if you haven't tried towing a 'van you will not be aware of how innate this behaviour is in other drivers.
I believe that towing made me a better driver in every way. Advanced driving courses often focus upon improved anticipation, and towing does exactly that.

A lot of these issues can be avoided -- either by being the slowest or the fastest.

My guess is that 98% of other road users couldnt give a Continental fruck about you (me) and your 'precious' car , whether it be on the motorway or in a supermarket car park . They simply just don't care. Hundreds and thousands of them see the car/van/truck they are in as a necessary evil. And you are just in their way.

Non of them join motoring forums.

There’s more of them than us.

"When the Stubborn meets the Oblivious"

So poodling along the A2 in the van yesterday pretty much empty. As I approach the M25 turn off I see one of those lifestyle Merc jeepie things (I refuse to call a coupe SUV) going about 50 mph in lane one. I move over to lane 2 but as had stuff on the back I was only going a couple of mph more. So when we get to the filter lane "on" from the M25 I see a petrol tanker signaling to join. So still doing 52 I pull into lane 3 to allow the Merc to pull into lane 2 to let the tanker join. But no Mr oblivious decides to stay in lane 1 even though there is 40 tonnes of explosives 3 inches from his wing mirror. The tanker refuses to slow down, reaches the end of the filter lane and drives along the hard shoulder. So I'm still sitting in lane 3 and it's a good 200 yards kicking up dust and debris till the tanker slows a bit and pulls in Behind the Merc in lane 1 !!!

Discuss :)

You see this every day.....a complete lack of spacial awareness (AKA Driving With Head Up A***e)
Yes, the tanker should have been prepared to slow and filter in behind MercMan/Woman/Other and should not have used the hard shoulder, but I understand the desire to maintain momentum and not have to drop down through about 6 & 1/2 gears. Fault on both sides, but I'm in the corner of the tanker driver on this one.

Mercedes driver inconsiderate. Tanker driver wrong.

More bloody-mindedness on the part of the Mercedes driver, I'd say. That's another characteristic of the sort of driver we're on about.

I always try to give HGVs room where possible; they're driving for a living, and I'm not. I'd have pulled into lane two, but then again, I'd not have been pootling along at 50 mph in the first place...

You suffer from this MUCH more whilst towing a caravan. It appears that most drivers have to be in front of you, regardless of whether you are travelling at the same speed as the rest of the traffic (It's an ego thing I think). Similar when filtering from 3 to 2 or 2 to 1 lane as mentioned on another thread. The fact that they have chosen to cut in and then slow down in front of a vehicle with more challenging braking efficiency seems lost on them.
I was going to post this at the end of this thread, others always overtake even trucks (even when your travelling at 60) and then proceed to slow down again and then slow you down!

I always let in HGVs, even when they are attempting to pull out of lay-bys. The times I’ve seen other cars in lane 1 not attempting to see ahead and not given way or move to a clear lane 2, what has happened to basic roadcraft ?

Possibly, but I think you're giving them too much credit for actually using their brain to make a conscious decision to be bloody-minded.
More than likely just a case of being in a world of their own, cocooned in their comfy barge with the music on and the cruise set, blissfully oblivious to what's going on outside.

It’s a funny thing, usually on these threads the advice is to not change speed or course to allow motorway joiners.

I thought the general view was that it was polite to do so if it can be done without compromising the safety of yourself or other traffic already on the motorway, but that those joining should not expect it to happen?

There's no point in being bloody-minded when common courtesy can make life easier for everyone.

A common theme of most of the posts in threads like this is that the vast majority of drivers don't take the act of driving seriously enough. They are often in their own little world, completely oblivious to what is going on around them, or how their actions affect others.

Add in lack of knowledge (such as the extended braking distances for certain vehicle types), poor lane discipline and a degree of bloody-mindedness (such as, "I'm perfectly entitled to drive at this speed, even though I have a snaking tailback of 20+ vehicles behind me desperate to make better progress") and it's a wonder that there aren't more collisions than there are.

I had a work colleague who always cruised in the centre lane unless overtaking. His argument was that if something happened ahead of him he then had the option to move either left or right to avoid it. I had a news story pop up on F'book today about Police issuing TORs (I had to look that up - Traffic Offence Report) on the M62 this week to middle lane hoggers.

I know people who have used that justification too. But it's really just a cover for their lazy ignorance.

Back to the original post. Do you remember the James Bond film with the Aston Martin where the machine guns came out of the indicators.
That could be a deterrent. :)

Mrs S frequently trawls the classifieds to find her idea of the perfect urban vehicle.
An absolute b*gger to park, but no-one is gonna argue that it's their space....flat,1000x1000,075,f.u2.jpg

You're too polite. In those situations I stay in lane 1 and pass them on the inside, it either wakes them up or it doesn't.
Yeah i have undertaken many a car

I give them some time then get mad and just undertake them anyways
