Now the load cover is retracting (see separate thread) I,m on to the second item on the list of things not working on my 54 E270 Estate: Parktronic. When I turn it on the red lights illuminate and a warning sounds for a few seconds, then it switches off. The manual tells me it's not working and I should spend some money getting it fixed. So I put the manual to one side and got the 'lucky' hammer to investigate myself.

Now I've never had Parktronic on any previous car and don't know whether I will ever use it; all I hear from others with the system is them shouting "shut up, I know I'm close", however, if it's on the car I llike it to work.

Checked the sensors front and rear. The bumpers have been recently sprayed and judging by the runs on some of the sensors, so have they.

So!!! Can anyone tell me whether the sensors should still work after being part of a respray, or should they have been masked?

Until I have a reply I will put the 'lucky' hammer to one side.

Any other suggestions why the system should not work would be very welcome.

If the sensors have been sprayed with a thin layer, that should not affect correct operation. I assume one or more sensors are broken and should be replaced. If you have the car diagnosed you can figure out which sensors are bad.

Thanks for the prompt reply Diesel Benz.

I was hoping to have a rant about the incompetant bodyworkers ...... Just as well I didn't.

I plan to get this fault, and a number of others on this 'Good Value', 'sold as seen' car analysed by a local Indy early next week. Doesn't give me long to save up!!

Any more suggestions?

The only way that you are going to find what sensor(s) are faulty is to get it on a Star diag machine.

Don't necessarily rule out incompetent bodywork people!

Mine haven't worked properly (reliably) since I had the rear bumper blown over as part of a corrosion warranty job. The car has been on STAR and two of the rear sensors are reporting problems. Coincidence? I think not.

You can actually see clear coat runs on the two problem sensors. Again, too much of a coincidence for my liking. As I am never going to set foot in my main dealers again, I would rather attempt to fix the problem myself, which I will do when I can pluck up the courage to try to carefully rub down and/or polish the affected sensors.

If you search on here you will find evidence to suggest that paint thickness is indeed a problem to parking sensors.

How 'runny' are yours?

With my close up glasses I can clearly see runs on four out of the ten sensors, two front and two rear. Does Star really tell you which sensors are faulty? More magic!!

How much for sensors, or do I really want to know. Perhaps wet & dry on a sanding block.

Has anyone successfully removed the excess paint, I wonder?

As always on this forum it's nice to know you're not alone.

The excess paint is not easily removed and the sensors don't often work afterwards. I have tried it before.

PhilL You have mail.
