PC Cooling

thats serious cooling............

A bit OTT - it still won't bring your CPU below room temperature :p

If you really want to overclock a computer and bring it to the absolute bring of time travel, you will be looking at phase-change units. The coolign block (which connects to your CPU) can go as low as -60C (ish) and an average processor will run at about -30C to -40C.

Costs new are about £200 a unit, but vapochill has made a case with one integrated which might be worth a look...

Excellent! I shall get one fitted to my Flux Capacitor.......

All that water mixed with 240v... no chances to get it wrong really, What if you get a leak? It could kill.

How many of us have a Wii on top of one? :D :D

I have done this and had a leak, I used de-ionised water - not the crap you put in irons and car batteries which is still conductive, (this stuff is about 200-250 micro siemans, rain is about 350 which is slightly better than tap water as tap water hangs about and gets more conductive as essentially it has fallen from the sky,) this came from a Electro Discharge Machine at the place I worked at the time and the water was electrically dead, the cutting takes place with electricity underwater and there is no leaks, the water measured 2-3 micro siemans when I liberated it,

if you wanna read,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_discharge_machining#Wire_Cut_EDM

long and short of it was my water leaked all over my motherboard, graphics card and the 240V switching card for the pump, result - nothing, I only knew the leak had happened when the PC warned me the CPU temp had gone up, when I get wet socks when I went near it I knew what had happened!! so perfectly safe,

little tip, proper de-ionised water also cools better in cars, which is why the AMG had it in it and I also gave a few gallons to a friend who runs at Le Mans, they recorded lower temperatures and less oxidation in the system which made the whole car healthier,

So would a reverse osmosis unit ( to produce water for a marine tank , not a silly Brita filter thing ) produce suitable water for the car ?

TDS (after it has been through the DI resin pod ) is 0 ..

As Mark says, it's the impurities in water that make it conductive. But I would guess that a lot/most people running these systems don't have access to or don't bother with pure water?

I have good access to large quantities of reverse-osmosis treated water (I look after these ;)), pretty pure (under 10uS, typically 2-3), useful for batteries/cooling systems :)

It should do, it'll be miles better than tap water for sure.

Out of interest, what reverse osmosis unit are you using Howard?

Oil filled PCs have been done (silent cooling) and plenty more if you google. I'm pretty sure someone did a de-ionised water one as well, but I can't find the site/page I read it on. I remember the water one didn't run for too many hours as the water gets contaninated over time and starts conducting.

How often and how much water does it need out of interest?

If you want *perfect* quality RO water let me know, if you need it very often obviously it'll be a bit more awkward!

Haven't actually bought one yet ...

But am probably going to go for one of these ...

Marine fishkeeping is pretty demanding in terms of water purity , RO Man has a good rep in the fishkeeping world ...

Well i change 10% of the water a week ( 20L ) .... use it to mix up seawater ...

Plus top ups , when any water evaporates from the tank (approx 10L a week) , you top it up with RO so as not to affect the salinity. So i guess 30 ish litres a week ?

Where are you living now ?

I'll send you a PM :)
