I have a Nokia 6301 currently on Orange.

Of the many hundreds of unlockers out there, does anyone have any recommendations please?

Or, is it possible to do it onself via a helpful web-site perhaps?

Just been been on the site and like most of these sites, for some strange reason the Nokia 6301 doesn't figure on the list - strange!

Does anyone know why ?

Take it to your local shop that does it.
It will cost you somewhere between £5-£10 depending on how well dressed you are.
Done this about 5 times and never any problem. And it only takes a couple of minutes (if that).

I agree, best done at your local back street mobile phone shop.

If they cant unlock it you pay nothing. Many of these online unlocking tools dont work and you're unlikely to get any refund.

I haven't checked to see if your phone is listed (the addresses my be of interest anyway)

Some phones can't be unlocked with just a code - I believe in the shops they hook them up to a laptop and use a program they have bought - hence the need to charge a fee to recover the cost of the software.

Phone Orange - BB5 phones can be tricky to unlock and Orange will give you the code over the phone/email for a small fee
No need to risk the market stalls for £20

Vodafone will unlock any contract phone FOC - just ring them up and ask them

BTW - IIRC the wifi on the 6301 is tied for UMA use by Orange - so if you do get it unlocked I reckon you may struggle with getting wifi on a different network (if that makes any difference to you)

I use Wifi extensively with my Nokias for SIP calling and that would drive me nuts that all of a sudden you cant use the UMA function (not on Orange any more) and cant use Wifi to transport SIP !

Money saving expert have a useful forum - with serveral unlockers contributing - as long as you don't mind posting your IMEI number you the get the unlock code and instructions back - the current thread is here - Free Unlock codes for Nokia Phones 8 (U.K. Networks Only) - Page 29 - MoneySavingExpert.com Forums

Lots of people on the web trying to sell you unlock codes and software so it's very hard to find free codes and decent advice. That said I've unlocked several phones - helps if you are good with google, pick your search words carefully, and don't give up after the first page of results. I did an LG cookie (501) a few months back that was quite tricky as you had to install the correct USB drivers to access the phones memory/os upload a few files to your PC and disect them using some downloadable tools.

I'm not bothered about WiFi or anything other than a usable phone and the camera function.

It's to "upgrade" my partner's elderly Nokia 6310
