Please advise me

Hi,
I have an E320 CDI on a 53 plate. I have noticed that the handbrake/foot brake does not engage. I had the AA out to it last night and they were not able to diagnose the problem. The handle is loose and just to top all of this of the car is shortly due its MOT. The cables are all intact as this has been a past issue when my father owned the car.

Any helpful hints and tips would be great fully appreciated.

Thanks for the response. Forgive me as I know very limited things to do with cars. If this is the case is it a long job and expensive as the Mrs has booked the car in at our local garage?
