Posted before about this issue but still can't get resolved.

2006 CLS 320

Symptoms - car hunts and rocks at 1000 - 1200 RPM. Always create lots of thick blue smoke.

There is no smoke at idle , bring the revs up and it starts. Really stinks as well. This goes away when it is warm.

Staithes garage in Newcastle who are a well known MB specialists said it was the glow plugs... These were replaced... no difference.

They then advised injector issue.

All 6 injectors tested and all 6 have a leak (slight) at low pressure...

All 6 injectors replaced yesterday and the fault still exists...

The car has now had £2k spent on it....

PLEASE HELP as no one knows what it is

What error codes have been read?

It's bad when cold but almost completely vanishes once it's warm.

It's had strong fuel cleaner put through it..

I just don't know what to do as no one can diagnose the actual issue.

Glowplugs - unlikely cause if it starts ok.

In my experience blue smoke is oil burning. Is it possible that oil is leaking in the turbo and pooling in the bottom, then at 1000 rpm gets dragged into the engine and burnt off, could explain a soiled o2 sensor

Has the correct oil been used in the engine as a grade to thin can cause this problem. blue smoke is usually a sign of oil burning. What is the mileage on the car.

Car is on 92k now with a full merc and merc specialist history.

I have had 2 garages say it's the turbo, but when they inspect it they say there is no play in the shaft.

I don't want to spend money getting the turbo done unless it's guaranteed to fix the issue.

It's been looked at by 4-5 garages all giving different diagnostics.

I can get a recon turbo no problem for it.

I do occasionally get the same jerking when it's warm around 1200 - 1500 rpm and driving...

Could be head gasket or leaking valve stem seals...

I don't think you're going to get closer to a resolution by asking yet more people to guess what the problem is

The car has diagnostics so use that. I'd read live data off it when it's idling & then revving when cold and see what that throws up

I know with BMW diesels it's possible to "read" cylinder compressions by watching the fine variations of the rotational speed so it should be possible to diagnose the misfire / hunting at idle. Once you find a fault you should be on the way to resolving the problem

The best guy who can help you is olly from pcs as I think he is the best guy to diagnose the problem

It has been looked at by the following.

Weirside Mercedes
Staithes Mercedes
Merc solutions

All with full diagnostic systems and still no one can find the fault.

It's not throwing up any errors on it at all and is turning into a money pit

I came on the forum looking to see if anyone had any other ideas that would be causing this...

Fairly standard thing to do IMO

What does the live data show? If it's misfiring at idle I would think there must be something showing in the data

What is the live data showing with the injectors? Were they under fuelling or over fuelling?

Sounds a bit strange all 6 having a slight leak at once?

As an example, this was the readings off my Lexus IS220:

If it's definitely thick blue smoke (not grey) then I wouldn't worry about the injectors too much.

Star has a compression test that disengages the injectors and cranks the motor. It will display acceptable levels. 2 minute test and can help narrow it down.

Piston/piston rings may sound frightening but it is madness to keep throwing money at other replacement parts without having a proper investigation.

Despite the turbo shaft having little or no play, it's not unheard of for the turbo oil seal to fail on the OM642.
