untill recently it started without use of accelerator it now takes two attempts for a rather lumpy start. any ideas.

I had a similar problem on my C200 Sport, it wouldn't start with the foot of the throttle. I found a carbon build up in the throttle body around the area of the butterfly valve, I removed the throttle body to clean it out although I believe other people have used carb cleaner to do the same thing. After this it started perfectly from both cold and hot.

yep same problem on my w202, build up on the throttle body was the cause, thorough clean out with carb cleaner did the trick for me. Took it to a merc specialist first who hooked it up to the machine and read the fault as the throttle body, they quoted £300 for a new one. Try the carb cleaner first not much money or effort for it really.

thanks i'll give it a try
