I am thinking of getting a Porsche Carrera 4s. Is there anyone on here that has had experience of these? It may, if I decide not to keep the CLS at the end of the PCP, become my daily driver so would be grateful for any advice.

A friend just bought a 100k miles 4 year old 1 owner 4S and absolutely loves it. I'm jealous - can't afford one even trading in my 968.

Hi Fizzer. I have just sold my 2009 generation 2 manual C4S. Quite simply the best car I have owned or driven. They do everything (except masses of space) so well. Some say the handling on a 4s is a little muted vs 2s, yes the 2s feels lighter at the front but the more planted front end suited me.
I am not sure what your budget is but the gen 2 cars are noticeably faster and more fuel effecient, my car would see 22 mpg around town and 30 on a steady run. Servicing is 2yrs or 20k miles and rear tyres should last 12-15k.
Handling wise there is so much traction exiting corners its just fantastic fun but the traction control is less intrusive than in many other cars I have driven but thats probably down to the fact that its got a ruddy great engine over the back wheels. In the wet you really wouldnt notice untill you got into big trouble that it was a 4wd as I think rear drive is something like 80% anyway.
Interior is really comfortable with bags of leg room and perfect driving position. The new nav system is touch screen and very easy to use although the animation is not the best I have seen.
I had sports exhaust and loved it and I would definatley spec it along with Nav and Bose as a absolute minimum. If you go for a PDK car you must have sports chrono as with out in auto the box wants to change up too soon.
If you are buying second hand I would personally make 100% sure you get one with a proper Porsche warranty and if you do get one with a warranty make doubly sure that it has nothing fitted to it that isnt a Porsche product or fitted by any one else other than an OPC. Official Porsche Centers have been known to refuse warranty renewals on cars with after market hands free/ipod interfaces so beware.
If you are buying second hand then try Stirlings, 911 Virgin or Paragon. Mark Pearce at Stirlings has a brilliant reputation and would be my first port of call.
In summary they are just fantastic cars and you will love them. Good luck and feel free to ask anything specific. :)

Hi thanks for the very comprehensive reply. I am a little previous in making my enquiry. Its going to be 18 months - 2 years until I am going to take the plunge, although those that know me know that only taking 2 years to do my research almost consitutes an impulse purchase for me (lol). Still the research is all part of the fun (isnt it? :o). On the up side what is a new car now will be affordable to me by then so will be 2nd gen with PDK :bannana:. I have wanted to own a 911 since I was a kid (many years ago now) but, as with many people who start families at a fairly young age, circumstances have dictated that I have a saloon car. Until now :devil:. Now its me time. :D. I'll certainly have a look at the sites that you have given me. Thanks again :thumb:

Lookin good. Thats about the right price, somewhere between 35 and 50000. TBH I'm waiting for the final settlement of the claim following the leg losing accident. I'm not wanting to waste money on a new one but a low mileage 2-3 year old at close to half price would be about on the money. Its gonna be towards the end of 2011 though. Just starting to collect information from those more qualified :D. Forgot to mention, as a result of said accident I am no longer blessed with a clutch pusher so its got to be an auto/semi-auto/PDK/tiptronic. Cheers :thumb:

I thought for a split second you were on about not wanting to buy a new leg, just the way the sentence read :D.
What happened?
The new 997, or 991 as I think its going to be called will be out by the time you get one so it should make generation two with pdk within your grasp. Home Page: Peter Morgan Consulting This guy has a very good reputation for vehicle inspections although I have not used him there are a few on www.911uk.com that have and give good feedback. Also have a look on this site for members cars that come up for sale and Porsche Club GB Forum. I think the porsche club you have to register first but its good site.

The one in the link is a perfect example of what not to buy if resale is an issue. The Aerokit is a pain as the front spoiler catches, the black wheels are not to everyones taste and the red interior will just limit your market down even further. Stirlings The Low Mileage Porsche Specialists, although a 2s this is more what I would be looking at.

Motorcycle v Volvo leg was trapped between car and bike before I went over the car and slid about 40 ft on my front wearing a good chunk of what wasnt left in the side of the car away. I was airlifted into hospital and given a "life saving" op Thats the short version of what was a particularly long day :(. Thankfully the driver was prosecuted for dangerous driving based on witness statements (and I suspect telephone records) and 100% of the blame apportioned to her. Whilst it was definitely not a good day the compensation should be enough to keep me in the manner to which I have become accustomed, although it will be around another 2 years (this happened exactly 2 years to the day in 2008) before the settlement (hence the 18 month eto 2 year "research" period).
Thanks for your help so far I am sure that there will be further opportunities to bend your ear before I make the final decision. :bannana:

The silver lining of owning and driving a 997 is wonderful, but the cloud required to get it - you have my sympathies and respect.

There will be a local PCGB regional meeting once a month where you can meet owners face to face, look at cars and learn a hell of a lot. Not sure which region would be closest for you, but a call to PCGB (look on Porsche Club Great Britain) will sort that. They will normally welcome guests, especially potential future owners, even if you're not a PCGB member (that's how we went to our first region meeting last year - although we owned the 968 we were not then club members).

Another reason for joining at least the PCGB forum is that members often post "for sale" ads on the forum before they appear in Porsche Post or on Pistonheads. Plus, if you find something you like, you can ask if anyone on the forum knows the car.

I know you always get the "I knew a bloke who...." replies but I genuinely rode with a bloke who came off and lost his arm when riding into a community bus. He was an absolute head case, he got back on a bike had it converted and basically clipped his arm onto the handle bars, I used to think if he hadnt clipped himself in properly it would be another nightmare under braking.
Just thought can you park in dissabled spots? thats going to look brilliant in a 911! :)
Good luck for your search next year.

Thanks chrishazle for the reply I'll check out the Porsche club website, maybe see you at some meet in the future. Bobbersmill, certainly can use disabled bays! I get some strange looks already in the cls, even worse in my wifes z4 lol. Still I'd take my old leg and a 10 year old mondeo any day! No use complaining tho just gotta make the best of what you've got. ;-) no complaints here.
