Possible purchase of a CL55 AMG

Hi all,

New user to the board here and thought I would pick your brains...

I've recently been offered a CL55 AMG 2002 shape with just over a 100k on the clock.
Bodywork is immaculate and it drives like it's still new.
No Malfunctions on dash though I'm unsure if the ABC has had issues in the past or not.

I can't see many threads on here about the CL55 - does anyone know much about the issues this model has had?

Another issue is insurance! I can't seem to find anyone who will insure me for less than £1700 with a £3000 excess.
To be honest, this alone is putting me off as the combination of the two (should anything go wrong and it's my fault) is over 50% of what I would be paying for the car.

Is this normal for this type of car?
I am 26 with 8 years driving exp + 8 years NCB.
I do have an SP30 but it's due to be removed next year.

I've been driving £30,000 cars for the past 5 years or so so I know its not a combinaton of age and value so the only thing I can think of is the engine size?

Appreciate any advice -

Welcome to the forums.

The reason is the AMG badge. The insurance companies think along the lines of

"There is a CL500, a 5L V8. If that's not powerful enough for him, what kind of driving does he intend to do?"

Hello and welcome.

No advice regarding the CL I'm afraid (too big for me) but with regard to insurance, it might be worth trying Admiral or Elephant (same company) for a sensible excess. I was getting quoted £750+ excesses on my SLK55 with a lot of insurers - and I'm 46 and a pretty good risk, I think, Elephant were prepared to insure me with an excess of..... nowt. I put a £100 voluntary on the policy just to show willing..

Cheers,

Gaz

This year will be difficult year to get insured on any car due to the amount of claims processed in the last 12 months. The crash for cash scam and bad winter early this year cleaned out alot of insurance companies and now everyone will have to pay more to balance the books. Hope this helps. My insurance quote doubled this year even though I have made no claims, same insurance company for 5 years, same car for nearly 5 years, full NCB etc, it really sucks. Good luck

Whereabouts in the country are you buying this one from? I was offered one in the Blackpool area a couple of months ago but passed it buy becuase the panels gaps at the front were way off spec!

I hope it's cheap? The cost of repairs would put me off, unless I had the best warranty thown in. Then I would get a black one

Agree - CL's have to be bought in black - no other colour is as menacing on the road.

You can turn up at various garages and they fall over themselves trying to help you out. Maybe they are after some cheap drugs :D
