About a week ago the steering was making a groaning noise when being turned on my S-Class ..

I instinctively checked the poser steering oil which seemed a bit low.

Went to dealer and after looking at the chassis umber gave me 1 litre of oil for £15.38.

Part number ...

MA001 989 24 03/10 10141031 PAS OIL

As it was late i put some oil in and brought the level to the cold level mark on the dipstick and carried on driving and the noise went.

When I looked into the PAS oil reservoir the oil looked almost clear ( watery like ) and the oil that the dealer has given me is a Green coloured oil ??

Today the car has lost all PAS and when the wheel is turned makes really load groaning sounds !!

I am not sure if the oil supplied by the dealer has caused this or that my pump was on its way out etc ? any advice as to whether this oil is right first of all and next and how much will a new pump set me back ?

I doubt there is a prob with the oil..
Check oil level again and check for leaks.
Also make sure belt is not slipping.

I checked my steering oil level tonight and I need to top up. Is it adviseable to use only MB spec oil, and is it green in color ?

I would only use MB's oil in the power steering.
The oil is a greenish colour and the 'part' number on the bottle i was sold is.....A000 989 88 03 16.

update...

took the car into local indi and got them to check it over.

After cleaning the engine / power steering pump / rack area of dirt and road grime etc we turned the wheel left and then right a few times.

We could then see some fresh oil coming out from the joint of the pipe going from the pump to the rack .. apparently this is not an uncommon fault ?

There were at least three turns on this to make tight and then 0.5 litre of PAS oil was added to the reservoir.

No sounds now and works just fine ... phew..pump is good after all that !

Well, there you go :)
shows how a look often fixes things .;)

I looked high and low for equivalent PAS oil for my W203 and didn't find any that met the MB specification so I believe it's the only good one. I used one litre of green couloured oil in mine. Removed original old light yellow oil by undoing return line (normal clamp in hose to tube joint near lower front bumper) and turning wheel with engine off. I was highly recomended to bleed all air before starting engine. Turn steering several times from lock to lock till no air bubbles come up and reservoir is topped up on cold mark. Then start engine, let it warm and check level through hot mark. I din't have to top up.
