....I can't find the diagnostic connector on my 1998 W140 S500. I can find pictures online of where to find it on US cars but it is not in the same place.

Can anyone help ?

Under the bonnet in the fuse box. Round 38 pin. I think.
That's the MB diagnostic connector, if the OP is looking for some kind of universal connector then he might be out of luck - they weren't required by law until about 2001
 
I know. You are talking OBD. But the round connector, with a convertor can be used for the purposes he is perhaps thinking about.

Yep I meant the round 38 pin connector which carries the OBDII signalling in the absence of an OBDII connector in the footwell per US cars.

The connector was actually under a plastic panel well in front of the fuse box but got my system hooked up to it (using an OBDII to 38 pin adaptor) and could see I need a new MAF sensor. Bother.
