Hi, i just posted this in another area of the forum, but thort this would be most appropriate.

Hi people, im new to the forum.. I was just after some advice really...I have a C 180, W202. Over the last couple of months, iv found my car starting to become a pain to drive... In the morning, it will need a at LEAST 5 mins to warm up with out fail, and while this happens a loud kind of banging noise will come from the engine, it will eventually stop however. The main problem is pick up, its just wont move!! I have to wait ages when turning at a junction, because i know my car wont move quick enough.. Do you guys have any ideas about what the problem could be...?

Many thanks, here is a pic.

During warm up most cars will change air\fuel mixture to aid the car warming up. What used to be known as a "choke". Seems you have a problem with that, not sure what controls this. There's a few members on here that really know their stuff, so you should be OK.

5 mins to warm up is normal, however it should run ok during warm up, tapping could just be hydraulic tappets and an oil change should help keep them quieter, is the car an auto? if so is it engine power you have lost or slip from the box? or stuck in a high gear? if you have loss of engine power the air flow sensor could be faulty, or you may only be running on 3 cylinders, blocked cats can cause a lack of power, to be honest this is difficult without hearing the car as there are so many things it could be.

Sounds like an air mass problem to me.

The banging. Is is backfire or a mechanical bang/knock?

Sounds exactly like the problems I was having with my W202 (C200), new MAF and it was all sorted:) , have a theory that it was caused by pattern air filters fitted by a regular garage I used for a couple of services.

If it is backfire it could be the MAF on its way out.If it is an auto you may need to rest the gearbox

Its more of a bang, but that it self isnt really too much of a problem, because it will stop after a while, and will only happen a couple of times. There just is no accelartion what so ever, Its embarrassing when at times i cant keep up with a bus, when driving up a small hill!

What is ther MAF, and how much will it cost to replace..? And yes, its an automatic.

Do you think, that could be the solution, or could it be something else..?

Could be a lot of things. When my maf was faulty, it needed 2 tries to start up. then gave a bang like a little firework going off then strugglled to idle for 5mins. As soon at it became warm everything was spot on.
You can find out if it is the mAf by disconnecting the plug when next you start it from cold. The ECU should use default settings to start the car.If it works OK then you know it is the MAf. Do not drive it around with the MAF unplugged though as it could be bad for your fuel consumption and your cat.(not the pet)
You can find the device located on the tube between you air box and your beather pipe, on the left side of your engine if you face the car.

AS for pick up could be your ATF fluid or torque converter or gearbox ECU. I do not know much about autoboxes.
Just do a search for MAF on this forum. Is it a diesel?

I too would say the MAF, I often had times when I would put my foot down, the revs would redline and the car would drive about 10mph!

i think you should look for
mb 0000940948 or equivalent
Look at the spec of your maf and try to replace like for like
I think yours is a bosch and not siemens. i may be wrong but that one is too new for yours.
what year is your car?

Have you tried inquiring from your local dealer regarding price and part number. It may very well cost high but atleast you will have the comfort of knowing its genuine and it will most probably last longer
