ive just built a new pc. pcchips 266 motherboard and athlon XP2400 processor (fsb 266) when the computers been on for about ten minutes the processor usage goes up to 100% even though there are no applications running, once its at 100% it stays there. Any help would be much appreciated as i havnt got a clue where to start.

Im away from home till sunday now but by memory it was something under the "system" heading, when i selected it and chose "end" It said windown had to shut down. Ill get more detailed information sunday.

If it is the "system" process, your computer may be running a disk defragment, or indexing files if you have indexing enabled. You can also get high CPU usuage on that process if there is alot of disk access. Under the process tab in task manager, you should be able to see if usage is constant, or if its up and down. Whats the system run like when it happens, is windows slowed right up or can you still open folders etc? Also, there is another process, "system idle" which should normally be ticking over <5% of cpu, it wasn't that was it?

It is a common mistake but 'system idle process' means exactly that, idle time, so if it is showing around 95 to 98% then this is totally normal.

web pages just seem to take ages to load up when it happens, as i said im away from home till sunday, ill get the exact details when im at home.
thanks so far.

My friend has just had the same problem

The computor slows right down and the task manager indicates processor is operating at 99-100% when no programes are running.

Reason

Virus w32.gorki

If you are broadband unplug it and see if the processor usage declines.

(Virus attempts to log onto about 1000 sites and update itself every time it senses a live internet connection hence the massive processor useage)

My friend had to completly reformat the hard drive and reload the operating system then load a virus checker then activate the windows firewall before even thinking about installing the broadband software again.

Sorry if this scares you but it does happen
