Purchase Conundrum!

Still sorting out issues with the purchase of a new SLK, then I saw something in the paperwork that makes me wonder if it is reasonable or unreasonable for me to hold Mercedes Benz to contract on.

According to the Salesman a new set of prices are due to come out at the end of September and the inference being that prices will go up. This statement could be complete "BS". But on that basis, and noticing that the last price came out in June 2010. Here's my problem. I notice that the SLK that we are due to purchase was ordered in February, delivered to UK docks on May 5th and was in the Showroom approximately on the 18th May.

Should the retailer be held to the pre-June prices on this vehicle or would they be in their rights (as they appear to have done) to price the SLk on post June 2010 prices for the car and optional extras???

Thanks for any feedback

Is there a price mentioned in your contract to purchase the car?

If there is, then that's the price you pay unless you have agreed elsewhere in the contract to pay a higher price after a general revision.

May be a done deal then, I've signed a 'vehicle order'. But have yet to sign any other documents.

You can't "hold them" to anything, legally. They are offering to sell you something for a certain price. You have agreed to pay them that price. Just because that price may have been different when the goods entered the Uk, doesn't mean you are entitled to it. Google " offer to treat" and you will get a fuller explanation.

I've been told that a price increase of around 2 per cent is due on October 1. This has been factored in to my order for a car due to be delivered in mid-November.

Also: the present finance deals come to an end on September 30,though expected to be renewed on similar lines thereafter. However, if the new deal is worse - from my point of view - I will have the option of cancelling.

So if a car ordered in August and scheduled to arrive in November did not arrive until January, would the customer have to pay the October increase and 20% VAT?

On paper - yes. Though I think a negotiation could take place. My order is marked 'Finance to be finalised'.
