Pure Lunacy!

Brings back memories of my Busa ownership.

Its hard to resist the temptation to do this when you have one, it really is. I used to get up to all sorts of antics.

If I didnt get into the 'the blurr zone' (the point at which the buffeting on your helmet was so severe that you couldnt read the speedo) on the way to work I was dissapointed. Another favourite was to get onto the M4 at chiswick and see if I could hold my breath until my exit at Slough. Again, dissapointing if I couldnt.

It was only a matter of time before I got collared for it though and I made a decision never to own a bike of that kind again. It's like a drug though, every so often I find myself wanting to go back and have some more.

So easy to take the moral high ground here, so instead I'll just say what a pleasure it is to have you as an Admin here ;) ;)

Never been into bikes but found it fascinating and slightly jealous as todays motorway lane discipline makes me want to aim for the hard shoulder .....even if, in the end, you end up sitting there biting the quick off your nails ....

...i love that quote "blur zone" when you get to over 150 and your jacket is slapping you and your head is being bashed around by 150mph wind turbulance from the screen, ya chin is banging the tank and your trying to see through the blured screen, you hit the rev limmiter and change into 4th with another two gears to go!!! the yamaha r1 in the pic below used to top out at 198mph never could get it to 200 but it was an insane bike tuned to race standard, there is a rider limmit, this was way past mine, but you never want to admit that. you cant get near that fealing in a car!....you also cant fall off a car!

All of the above scare me.

Genuinely scary sh*t.

That turbo'd busa; did it really hit 220 that quickly?

I can see the attraction however the lads that do this should see a friend of mine. He rode his bike like this until 1990 and he is now a quadriplegic. He crys himself to sleep every night, cant do anything for himself, realises he is a drain on society and a burden to his family. All for 10 seconds of lunacy. Is it worth it:confused:

I was just thinking that you would not want to survive an accident if you were going like that....

WTF "realises he's a drain on society?" I rode for nearly 40 years until 4 years ago when i lost my left leg high above knee and broke my back in an accident when travelling at probably the slowest speed that I'd travelled at in all the preceding 40 years.
REALISES HE'S A DRAIN ON SOCIETY!! sounds like you making an assumption Pal!! "He's a burden on his family!! REALLY have you actually heard them say this?
If society cant take it **** EM!! I definitely have never felt like a burden to anything!!"
Given the recent *** ban I suppose that I will get a ban also for being "provocative" TBH this has ****** me off enough to not give a flying ****. Self righteous *****!!
I drive a Mercedes these days. I NEVER would have considered this, or any car, anything other than 2nd class transport from any bike I have ever owned, pre accident.
:mad::mad::mad::mad:

It also sounds like you are making an assumption that someone else is making an assumption. Pot Kettle Black.

And since you don't feel like a burden on anyone, I would venture to suggest that it is probably because you are still mobile and can drive?

At the end of the day MrVix's opinion is as valid as your own.

I certainly hope you don't get banned fizzer. You have expressed your opinion and that is fine, maybe you could have done it a bit more tactfully.
.
Unfortunately your assumptions are wrong on all accounts. The gentleman concerned is a very dear friend of mine and has found his situation extremely difficult for many years. His family and friends don't feel that he is a burden but the important thing is he feels like a burden. I am sorry if my post upset you it was not ment to offend in anyway but it is one of the many possible outcomes of riding a bike or any form of transport in a manner beyond a persons capabilities and in the wrong environment.

Agree entirely.

I like a good blat on a bike as much as the next man, and (though I say it my self) was rather proficient as pulling good wheelies and stoppies as well.

But never would I ever have considered riding like those loons did and for so long. when surrounded by innocent law abiding motorists going about their business!

You like that sort of speed then take your Bike to a Track day and fill ya boots.

No, I dont think it did. I didnt hear the Turbo wastegate, nor did the speedo show and sign of a surge from a turbo, so I suspect that it simply had a bigger rear sprocket to lower the gearing a bit and since the speedo is calculated from the output shaft rotational speed, the indicated speed is thrown off kilter.

That particular model was a 1999 version (with 220mph clocks) and a bog standard no turbo'd one will indicate close on 220mph on the speedo but the speedo is wildly inaccurate at those speeds and in reality only a handul of stock Busa's globally have ever really hit a true timed 200mph and the few that have, must have all had a very favourable tailwind.

A turbo'd busa however can carry on to reach obscene speeds. I have personally witnessed a heavily modified but standard bodied Busa hit a true 265mph (here in the UK) and I believe the current record for one with modified bodywork currently stands at 311mph.

These videos are at least useful to demonstrate the ability to those who have never ridden a powerful bike.

theres always a story somebody has to tell when it comes to motorbikes, because when it goes wrong, it can go wrong in so many ways and have such a terrible effect on those around you! i was at times a nutcase i admit that, but i would never do it in traffic and weave in and out putting others at risk, i also never took pillion passengers, i also watched my friend die infront of me as a car pulled out on him at a junction he went through the side of the car and out the other side, he ripped his arm off from the shoulder and was dead at the scene, but sometimes you have to get on with life, life is what you make of it! we all know the risks when riding a motorbike at high speed, just like when we get into an aeroplane, train, boat, climb a mountain, bungy jump, track days, all these things envolve some sort of "risk" wether its a 1000,000/1 or 10/1 chance of having an accident or dying its the risk we are willing to take, but i am strongly agianst putting other people at risk. but we do it every day, just driving around at the normal speed you are at one time or annother going to have an accident or wittnes an accident. ive had two accident on a bike, both times travelling at traffic speed where somebody else has not seen me and turned onto me! track days, ive never had an accident but if i did, i rather it was my own fault and not putting anybody at risk.
if we are all expected to drive within the speed limmits, why do they make cars faster and faster with more and more bhp, more and more top end speed!? it quite easy for manufactures to limmit cars at there top speed, and have gps speed restrictions so you cannot speed, but they dont do it and i guess they never will, the simple fact is most of us want to go faster at one point or annother, and we wouldt buy these cars if at one point or annother they were capable of going faster that the guy next to you!

...oh and "ghost rider" or the black bussa bike set the world record wheelie at 214mph, so its not a myth or bigger sprockets, but that guy is going to die very soon, he seems to think he is invinsable, a very tallented rider, but also completely insane!!

Others have spoken in here about "talented" riders who are able to handle the massive power-to-weight ratio of these bikes. But are they really talented? I'll admit that it's many years since I've ridden a powerful bike, and despite being amongst the fastest racing bikes in the world at the time, they'd undoubtedly be left for dead by many of today's road bikes. But it really isn't all that skillful to twist a throttle and hang on. The talent lies in being able to use the power in the right place and at the right time. The talent lies in being aware of the abilities, or more specifically the lack of abilities, of every other road user around. None of the "look how fast I am" videos demonstrate any talent. They all demonstrate riding a bike beyond their capabilities; their capabilties to comprehend the capabilities of everyone else.

The 1999 busa has 220MPH clocks...later models only go up to 200mph.
