Ive had my 350SL just over a month now and really enjoying getting out in the fresh air with it.

It’s a 2004 and has now covered 8,500 miles and believe it or not I’ve found many of the features haven’t been activated since new like near side mirror dip when parking and steering wheel convenience setting.

Anyway should the R230 beep when locked or unlocked like my CLS does. I can’t seem to find anything in the manual about this.
Also is there a warning if seatbelts are not buckled up. There is a warning light at start up but that seems all there is.

Not sure about seat belt warning but lock/unlock bleep is usually programmable from steering column..

A lack of a beep could be caused by a failure of the alarm siren. These don't last forever and cost about £100 to replace. Have you tried setting off the alarm by opening with the key blade? If your lights flash but there's no sound...there's your problem.

Oh! my CLS doesnt bleep on lock or unlock.

Mine doesn’t and haven’t seen an option to do so. Just the indicator flash.

I think you have a red indicator warning in the middle of the rev counter for when seat belts are not fastened.

Also seen a more sophisticated one in the speedometer although that's more to check the rear seat belts are fastened if passengers in there as I don't think there are occupancy sensors in the rear seats.

04 R230 SL does not do locking bleeps in the UK. Only latest vehicles have a cluster menu option to turn them on/off. However it can be coded by changing region code for alarm to an area that does have locking bleeps. Also if you fit a new alarm and fail to do the coding on it, they normally have locking bleeps on!

Thanks Richard and to the others who have replied.

Today I locked the car and checked the warning light on the centre of the dash was flashing. All ok so I then unlocked the car using the emergency key and hazard flashers came on right away.

My next question was going to be where is the sounder mounted but as you say the SL does not have locking beeps on locking / unlocking.

However it does say in the owners handbook that there is an audible alarm. It seems odd not to have a sounder working alongside the hazards. The way it is, it’s not really an alarm.

Your siren should sound if hazards flashing so your sirens has died. It’s in one of the front wheel arches can’t remember which!
If I change it yourself it will beep on lock and unlock until/unless the country code is changed to UK with star diagnosis.

My 2004 SL500 has locking bleeps.

I thought as much. I looked into another forum and there was a topic where the siren was changed.
They have their own independent battery which at 15 years old may have given up the ghost so to speak even though the cars only done 8,000 miles.

I’m going to have a look tomorrow if I get time and if it’s the same as the CLS it’s under the drivers side.

Yes. Id imagine every 2004 car will have a new or non working alarm siren. My SL is 04 too and had a new siren a couple of years ago.

Well just my luck I suppose but today I stripped off the drivers side wheel arch liners but no alarm.
Anyway I used the time to give the area a good wash down then over to the other side.

Success ! the sounder is mounted by three nuts onto the inner wing on the passengers side adjacent to the main battery.

After removing the sounder I opened it up using my Dremmel and what a state it’s in.
The printed circuit looks as if it’s almost been on fire ( not a nice thought ) so I will order up a new sounder so before packing up I’ve given the wheel arch area a good power wash and parked the car up minus the wheel arch liner, no point in re fitting it until I get the new alarm.

My 04 bleeps.

A new alarm siren will change that. Mine didn't beep until I fitted a new siren.
1 Beep = unlock, 3 beeps = lock
Thats interesting so the original spec was no beeps in the UK but if you fit a new siren as AMgeed and Richard state, the default becomes with beeps..... Every days a school day

My new alarm unit was waiting on me when I returned from a break in Tenerife so today I fitted it.
While I was at it, I stripped out both wheel arch liners to give the area a thorough power wash and a check over on the suspension components and as expected with just over 8k they were still like new.

With everything working I replaced the wheel and got a surprise when I slowly lowered the Jack.

The alarm went off proving the tilt function definitely works.
I also purchase a lead to connect a redundant iPod to the auxiliary jack which works well giving some extra music to play on those long runs.

Does the locking beep now work.

Oh yes ! three beeps on locking and one beep on unlocking, plus of course I now have a working audible alarm (siren)
One thing I like is that the beeps are not as loud as on the CLS, perhaps it’s just where the sounder is located, but at least you know the car is locked if walking away from the car without actually looking at the mirrors folding back.

Next on my list is some nice mood lighting which the missus loves on the CLS. I know I won’t get it quite as nice and I don’t want something tacky so perhaps a soft blue light at the foot wells will suffice.
