sl500
hi. I'm new to the site and have just purchased an 83 SL500.

It turns out it has the common problem for these cars and the bulkhead is shot.

I have stripped out and cleaned but now am having a real bear of a time sourcing the replacement panels.

I understand Mercedes don't make the inner cowling any more?

Anyhow does anyone know where I can source these? Or someone breaking an SL with a decent bulkhead area?

I am loath to scrap a beautiful car over this.

Many thanks in advance.

Andy

I had a full photo-set of pictures with my car from when it had; the work involved looked pretty scary, and the garage had to fabricate some bits.

Having had evidence of the work being done did make for a huge selling aid / point when I sold it, as because the issue is well documented buyers know what to look for.

You might want to go on the Mercedes Benz Club website and find mcmerc. Based in Redditch and spends his life restoring these cars. PM if you need a contact number.
Good luck

Mike...It's not mcmerc but merc tec he needs to contact and he would have to join the club before he got access to its forum. Merc tec is busy moving premises right now and it might be some time before he's able to do any work.

Derek thanks - my senior moment of the day. Has he stopped working from the basement beneath his house?

Yes he has moved out Mike and bought a farm with a massive workshop. Currently he is between homes renting whilst doing up the new place. But you are right he could help the OP with the bulkhead issue.

Andy...if you are interested in speaking to Steve (merc tec) send me a PM and I can give you a contact number...

Update on merc tec. Now in new premises but waiting for first coat of epoxy to dry on barn floor before second coat. Ramp on order for next week.

It's well worth waiting for Steve (Merc-Tec) to work on your car. He's carried out an awful lot of work on my 420, has very reasonable rates and you can trust him totally.

Btw, hi Derek, I got here eventually! :)
