R129 antenna half way

Hi all,

I am the new VERY pleased owner of an R129 SL500 from 1999 (last facelift - M113 engine) and I am loving every bit of it!

The radio is the stock MB Audio 30 unit and the radio (FM) also seems to work fine although the reception is not always crystal clear (when driving around London)...

I noticed the antenna mast only seem to go up half way - c. 60cm. Is that the normal height? If not, any suggestion how to fix that?

My car (a 2000 R129) is doing the same; I see replacements are only £25 or so on eBay so I am getting a new one from santa.

Are you buying a stock one or are there newer ones that are considered better? I read about a Hirschmann at one point but this is a fairly old product.

Are they easy to replace yourself?

New masts are easily available, not even expensive from a dealer. About 5 minutes to fit:

As per above posts, just check the letter code on the nipple on the top of the mast and buy its replacement.

It should be Hirshman aerial (not sure if I spelt that right) but check you get the right one by checking the code.

Replacement is 2 minute job.
