The door sills on my car look like they are supposed to illuminate - does anyone know how to remove them to check?

Ok well I removed them - look totally unserviceable - basically the Silver Arrow illuminated sill is glued on top on the original sill with a flat panel type of illumination. Anybody know how these work? I have a horrible feeling MB will want a fortune for these if they can replace them at all - what are the odds of buying the illuminated panel from somewhere?

Cheapest way would be buy a set from ebay, take the illumination strip out and swap with yours.

Actually, you should be able to buy the illumination strip as a seperate part from MB, maybe worthwhile ringing to check with them.

Do both not work or just one? Seems odd if they both don't work.

Looks like us in the U.K. are getting conned again with the prices, compared with the U.S.A.

I have those sills already, the panels aren't completely flat like OEM ones.

Neither work - looks like a design fault as they were full of water.

£165 - please tell me that includes the stainless sill as well?!?!

Here is the offending item(s):

Yeah, right!

Here are the actual sills:

B6 689 0012 : Illuminated stainless steel : £248.95
B6 689 0024 : Illuminated, 2 lights stainless steel : £217.00

Stats, have you tried drying them out on top of the boiler ? the strips are sealed in some sort of laminate i think, the ballasts (they step 12vdc up to 110vdc) are hidden i think under the carpets in the ducting

Is the water actually between the laminate ? if not then why not try a multimeter on the ballasts ? then on the laminate strips ,if they work as well it could be something as simple as a fuse...

I know my illuminated sills are aftermarket, but it advises you to run the wires to the courtesy light fuse in the fusebox, i wonder if yours is the same ...

If you need to replace the strip, the sills on ebay ( i got mine from the US , landed for £80 for the pair ) the actual laminate strip is a block of colour rather than the cut out letters that you have there, you could put them under the old sills and it would shine through the cut out in the metal on the SL sills, no one would ever know, then sell the ebay sills on again, might work out cheaper .....

Hope this is some help .....

Cheers Howard, will check this. I don't think the letters are cut out - I think because the panel is light sensitive, basically it has discoloured through the template in the sill.

Are you sure they require ballast? my retrofit ones run off of 12V.

Ah, thats interesting, my ones came with 110v ballast packs, which is why i decided to do it properly and not just branch off the door pin ;)

Maybe there are a few different variations ..... i thought that it needed a high voltage for the electro-luminescent strip to work but i could be wrong ....

Maybe this explains why there are two different types, check the prices I posted earlier.

Hmmn, unless my meter is dodgy I'm getting 150VAC N/S and 85VAC O/S

Anyway, tested both EL panels with 110VAC and nothing. :(

That's what I was thinking - just wondered if they used the EL panels and ballast like the W210 ones I posted. Are these the ones you bought?

Got a bee in my bonnet now

I got mine from the states for £80 ...... ECP didn't do w124 ones when i looked but i imagine the kits are the same TBH.....

LOL - just looked on ECP's website and the w203 illuminated sills are £42.98 ex vat (£50 inc vat) and they are selling them for £60 on Ebay ....

Theres an ECP in Chessington Stats, you you wouldn't even have to pay postage !

Looks perfect !! :bannana: can't see any reason why it wouldn't work, those are the same tapes in mine, thats what i was trying to say earlier, my EL strips are just a block of colour unlike yours that spell out SL Silver Arrow .....

Good find ! gotta be worth a try for ten bucks ......
