I thought I wanted an R230 SL55, but I took the SLK for a run today. My R230 SL500 undeniably has a better ride, but it's more of a cruiser, and doesn't begin to compare in the handling; the SLK just feels so light, wieldy and positive by comparison. On the other hand, the 55K engine is just so good, and the SLK could use a little more urge...

I've been thinking. How do I obtain SL55 performance, or possibly a touch better, in an R171; specifically, a 0-60 time to match? Quite easily and cheaply, perhaps...

Numbers:

Stock R171 SLK 55 - 354 bhp, 376 lb.ft, 0-60 - 4.7 sec; 1540 kg, 7G gearbox
Stock R230 SL 55 - 500-ish bhp, 516 ft.lb, 0-60 - 4.5 sec; 1845 kg, 5G gearbox (laggy)
Stock R172 SLK55 - 415 bhp, 394 ft.lb, 0-60 - 4.5 sec; 1610 kg, 7G gearbox
Mapped R171 SLK55 - 395 bhp, 420 ft.lb. (Claimed, for a Celtic Tuning ECU reflash)

I reckon that should do it, and maybe a touch more, for a total outlay of £300. Mine is already probably a bit quicker than stock, because the exhaust resonator boxes have been deleted.

I could of course go to MSL, but they would cost more, and I'd need an Awayday to Birmingham, while Celtic will come to me.

I'll post again when it's done.

Stick a supercharger on the SLK - job done.
Obviously you need the M113K mill with 470+bhp and 700newtons.
Anyway, if you go for a remap you get what you pay for. Celtic may be £300 but it'll be generic. Go to MSL or Speed Ministry at Mallory Park and £500 will get you custom map with dyno before and after.

Now that would certainly do the job, but not I think for £300...:). And the result would be a :ban: before long too...

I know the M113K engine well; I've had two E55Ks. It was never fitted to the R171 (or the R172, for that matter).

Remapping n/a engines doesn't give great gains without hardware changes in any event, so a cheap generic map from a reputable tuner will be fine. Besides, I don't want an awayday to Mallory Park any more than Birmingham.
