My recently-acquired n/a M113 SLK had an 'Exhaust Modification' at MBS in Southampton just over a year and 5K miles ago. I wanted more details on what exactly this was, and spoke to MBS today; the techie with whom I spoke could not remember the car, but told me that it was probably simply a secondary cat delete, and they have done many of these.

The car is quite raucous as it now is, and I have no complaints about the performance. However, I had hoped to be told that a resonator delete and x-pipe fitting had been done, but it would seem not. Does just a secondary cat delete sound like a quick cheap job, and is it likely to be a good bet for long-term reliability?

Pop down to your local Halfords and ask them to check tyres/brakes, FOC service and at the same time you can slip under the car and take a look at the mods...

Thank you for that, but I can jack it up and take a look myself; my query is really whether a simple secondary cat delete on its own is a desirable/useful mod.

From what i remember (when I had my SLK) most of the restriction in the exhaust is in the header section, so until that's replaced there's not much point in tinkering further back.

Then I looked at how much new headers are and lost interest. As it's N/A you'll do well to get it up to 400 brake in any event.

Cheers,

Gaz

I''m not after more power; I'm trying to find out if what has been done is a good thing...

Well if you find that the full conversion has been done (as MBS didn't remember your car), your question is a bit irrelevant, if it were my car I would want to know for sure what has been done so Jack away [emoji6]

I'm 99% sure that it hasn't; not enough was spent for an x-pipe ;);).

Anybody know the answer to the question I am asking?

I had a secondary CAT delete and an xpipe installed on my SL500. Its a common mod on these engines and on my car released a bit more of the V8 sound. The cost was £180.

Thank you for that; I think you have answered my question. The SLK55 has 50 more horses than the SL500, but it's basically the same engine, so should be OK. There's certainly plenty of sound now; a little too much for my taste, really, but there it is.

Interesting what changes makes those extra 50hp up?

For M113-engined cars, to which I am referring, the SLK has a 5.5l in the same state of tune as the W210 E55AMG, while the SL has a 5.0l in the same state of tune as the W211 E500.
