You know that D-shaped plastic cap with the little red oblong on it and reading 'MB Workshop Only'?

Is that the transmission dipstick tube without the dipstick?

Can I get a dipstick from Mercedes?

Can independents and general garages read the 'sealed for life' transmission fluid level without need to prostitute themselves to Mercedes Benz?

Let's imagine you've taken the engine cover off and you're looking at that D-shaped cover.

Move directly right and there's something on the top of the engine before you come to the sixth injector.

What is that?

Because mine is all tied up with about three cable ties.

To stop it moving about or coming off position.

What kind of people do such things!

Possibly poor people but more probably bodgers.

Is it something like a sensor to do with 'camshaft dwell angle' or some such thing?

In anticipation.

I have the same car can you give a pic of the thing tied up your talking about ?

You can order the original red plastic pin from MB and re-seal it nicely, from memory they are about £1.50 each.

I often wondered why MB bothered with this odd seal - until I read a post by a member here saying that a KwikFit trainee mechanic tried to syphoned-out the engine oil through the transmission fluid tube... it then became clear why MB wanted to deter people from removing the plastic cap.
