I was checking my lights Sunday and noticed that the rear fog light only illuminates on the offside.
I also noticed that only two segments were lit.

I cannot find the answer in hand book so I wonder if the forum can assist?

1. Should only 2 segments be lit or should the whole row illuminate?

2. If only the offside lights which is the case on some cars can the near side be coded to illuminate via STAR?

Car is a 2016 S212 E350.

Cheers,

Robin

Thanks I did think this may be the case although seems a strange stance, a car could look like a motor bike in fog from rear until close.

Which is not going to be an issue unless you were planning on undertaking the motorbike.

Two fog lights would look like a car braking and may well confuse the following driver just enough to divert attention.

Having done a Google search on rear fogs most seem to complete the row where they are lit (hope that makes sense)

On mine just two segments are lit, they are bright but not sure if more should be lit.

Mine is an S212 but I guess the W212 would be the same.

Could any 212 owners have a look please to see if this is correct?

I have attached photo so you can see what I mean.

That looks pretty normal to me for a UK spec car

Don't forget to turn it on every time there is a little bit of mist or rain about, especially at night when it should never really be used. Oh sorry I thought I was on the Audi owners forum...sorry.

I got a bit confused on this as well especially as I was trying to diagnose a problem with my left rear indicator and reversing lamp not coming on. I saw the fog lamp bulb and wiring there and just assumed it must be faulty as well. However after consulting Mr Haynes, the book diagram does only show one fog lamp as applicable.

Quite confusing but hey ho.

Don't forget MBs will use a substitute lamp should a light fail. So both sides have rear fogs but only one, the off-side is normally used. Should the near-side brake lamp fail the system will use the near-side rear fog lamp instead.

Ahhh, THAT's why when I was feckin' about with it the other night it was giving messages about an auxiliary lamp. I wondered what that was! Thank you for that snippet, every day is a school day.

On balance rear fog lights are more of a menace than a benefit especially given how much brighter normal rear lights now are compared to the 5W candles that were the norm when fog lights were first introduced. I've had to replace the 5 W rear lamp in my 1979 motorcycle with a 10W in order to bear any comparison with modern cars.
