Hi folks. Whilst adjusting the mirror and seat after my hubby had used the car, there was a loud dull thud from the mirror and it fell down as far as the plastic housing. He's had a look on the internet and found a couple of diagrams but it looks different apparently. He's taken off the front plastic trim and the mirror fell to the length of the wires. There is no broken plastic or bits left over, no glue residue if its bonded to the screen. Any help would be appreciated.

I thought I'd put an update to this. After multiple attempts with VHB adhesives and tapes it still let's go after a few days. Spoke with the local windscreen people and they said new windscreen as they come with the arm fitted at manufacturer. I felt compelled to ring, so our local Mercedes dealer also confirmed its a new windscreen. It seems such an over kill to get the mirror reattached. Now considering my options........

We got this sorted yesterday. A new windscreen was fitted which comes with the attachment disc bonded to the windscreen by the manufacturer. The arm then twists onto that disc. It comes with a lifetime guarantee so at least I can now adjust the mirror.

I can't believe this, my wife adjusted the interior mirror on our W207 convertible in January when it was minus 6c and the mirror came off the windscreen. I have tried everything to fix it and now the MOT has run out. Just read this thread and realised this must be the only way to fix it. Oh well I'll have to call the insurance. I'll let you know how I get on.

I am surprised to hear that standard rear view mirror bonds don't work. It this the part of the windscreen that has the black lines etched into it?

You can get a UV activated glue specially for the job.....takes ages to dry if its not sunny....but a couple of mins if it is. This is what the factory recommended for VW and Audi cars when I worked there....great stuff....but you only get one chance so positioning is critical....cus you wont get if off after its cured!!! A new screen for such a simple issue seems a bit mad to me!!

I'd have thought a piece of 3M VHB would have done the trick, although you do need to buy the genuine stuff; there's a lot of fakes around.

Its good stuff....but it would fall off pretty fast in the heat.

Tape, as thin as it may be, won't give the mirror the same solid feel when adjusting it, as a proper bond does.

Then, there are special bonds for glass, that are rigid but remain just flexible enough to absorb the glass expansion and contraction due to variations in ambient temperature without cracking the glass.

Hi any particular make of uv activate

Cant remember to be honest....It was a few years ago and probably came from the factory with a VW badge on the pack

....or the UV glue!!

At the end of the day Merc....or whoever makes their glass........ glued it on in the first place....so therefore its possible to glue it on again.

Pilkington made mine.

"Where can you buy the UV glue" is the next question? If I could have found it when I needed it, I'd have tried it. MB will sell you some, of course, but only the small amount already between the screen and the mirror mount...
