Can anyone recommend a code reader or diagnostic tool, either hand-held or PC based, that covers current Mercs? Ideally something that covers more than just engine and transmission, i.e. also ABS, SRS, etc.... thanks.

I've been looking at this one myself. Let me know how you get on with it.

BTW what price did you pay

I ordered it from AutoTec-Direct for 170.00 + next-day recorder mail delivery (I think around £6).

It can be had for less on eBay, but I preferred to buy from a 'proper' site using credit card (not PayPal).

Is also available from other places, such as Gendan for example, which charge £179 with 'free delivery'...

More interestingly, Genadn also have this one for £400: Mercedes Fault Diagnostics Package for C-Class, E-Class, S-Class and other models

but this is PC-based, and I had a PC-based thingy for my previous car (not Merc) and found the need for a laptop to be a bit of a pain, so decided to go for the more compact hand-held tool this time.

I am mainly interested to see how it deals with systems such as ABS, SRS, A/C etc - reading engine and transmission codes is something most readers do anyway.

It's here.... :)

Auto-Tec delivered next day as they said they would. Will give it a go later today :)

Well, for one thing, it only does the W203, not W204 - and while I have a W203 now which is OK, I was just looking at replacing it with a W204 (I saw a beautiful silver 320CDI with 3.0L diesel engine and and the famous 7-gears autobox and paddle-shifts, only 15k miles for £19k, but it went the same day...:( )

So if I change the car the tool won't suit :(

I've just had a look at Autel's website, and it states the EU702 is updateable via t'internet. Might be worth an investigation?

While I was there I looked under 'Supports' and found 'DTC_Library_V1.10.rar'

It's a complete lookup tool of generic OBD2 and also manufacturer-specific fault codes and it's free :bannana: There's also lots of interesting PDF files on the fault codes and how they're derived.

Well I tried it and it works... :)

It correctly detected the SRS (Airbag) fault code I had stored, and successfully cleared it.

The kit seems handy and robust, and very easy to use. On the plus side, it does cover additional manufacturer-specific systems (outside the ODBII scope) such as SRS and EPC. On the down side, it is stricly limited to reading and clearing fault codes on these systems, and nothing else, i.e. no testing/prgramming/configuring/uploading.

As for ODBII, it has comprehensive live data features including graphs and saving to memory (so that the info can be later uploaded to PC using USB link). But to be honset this is more relevant to a mobile mechanic, it means nothing to me... :)

So as a tool to read and clear various fault codes it does what it says on the box, and as mentioned elsewhere on this site when it saves two visits to the dealer it has paid for itself.. plus the dealer can't BS you.

The lack of support for w204 is disapointing though, considering that the model was introduced back in 2007. I will try and see if I can update it over the Internet as you said.

No software update available on Autel's website for the MaxiDiag EU702 :(
