Remote central looking range

Hi everyone,

I have just replaced the batteries in my key fob (93 SL) however the range is terrible, I need to have the key right next to the door handle, so kinda pointless at this moment in time.

Is this normal?
How far should it work from?
Would this be a key fob issue?

I'm not familiar with the R129 but it seems radio remote only appeared 1997 and IR has limited range.
