removal of flange from diff

Hello,

I have managed to wrap a load of sheeting around my prop shaft which subsequently stalled the engine (excellent!) Having disconnected the prop from the diff the sheeting is still wrapped around where the flange inserts into the diff. I will need to remove the flange to clear all the plastic from it. I am having trouble finding the correct socket size to remove this flange. I've attempted to research online including youtube, also bought a haynes manual today but nothing seems to show how to correctly disassemble and remove the flange. I'm not an experienced mechanic and am not comfortable with opening the differential. I would like to know if the flange can be removed without opening the diff, how to do so, and what size the torque socket is needed to remove it (if that is indeed the correct way to do so) Any help would be appreciated.

I drive a 208D sprinter 1996 Mk 1

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

I don't know this for certain but if it's anything like the car diffs it's not to be tampered with by a layman. It's got a pre-load setting on it which would be better left alone. Pre-load means it's set at the factory to give a very precise meshing of the internal gears. You can take a flange off and tighten it back up again but if you disturb the setting that will be that!

Can you not hack away at it with a Stanley knife, pulling bits out with pliers or similar?
