Hi All,

I'm looking at a car on a 'q' plate but I'll need to have the correct year of manufacture to import it to Belgium, otherwise I'll be paying a high road tax.

Do MB UK supply proof via the chassis number for a fee?

Has anyone done this?

Any info gratefully received.

Cheers,

Paul

If you post the car's VIN here, I could print-out the MB Datacard for it off EPC.

But it is just a computer print-out, will the Belgian authorities accept this?

Is it not possible that it's on a 'Q' plate as the original VIN/registration details have been lost (ie, stolen-recovered with ID marks ground off etc)?

If so, it might be difficult to obtain the info you require.

Once on a Q plate you can not remove

I think UCR is correct:
"Q" numbers are non-transferable, meaning that they must remain with the car. You cannot transfer them to another vehicle, and you cannot purchase another number plate for the 'Q' plated vehicle.

Presumably if he is importing it to Belgium, he will get belge plates...?

I think the OP is talking of re-registering the car in another country but will need the VIN number to fill out the correct forms

I was talking to a chap at a car show who bought a used Marcos with a Q plate on it and after a thorough investigation and help from Marcos the car had it's original plate returned to it. This is an exception though really!

Thanks Everyone,

Yes, I want to matriculate it in Belgium.

There is a lot more emphasis on chassis numbers over there.

On reflection, I'm sure MB Belgium will oblige me with a birth certifiacte which will be acceptable by the authorities if I take it to them for inspection.

Cheers,

Paul

Your difficulty might be that it is un-identifiable.

The UK DVLA wouldn't issue a Q-plate on a whim, I would think they'd be reluctanct to hand out 'new' VIN numbers and issue 'Q' plates as obviously it covers the tracks of a stolen vehicle's ID.

MB Belgium might not be able to issue you with the VIN or ID/Birthsheet if the identifying numbers/details are missing.

What is the car out of interest? Some of the more modern MBs might some identifiable details stored electronically?

Hi,

It's a W123, with the number clearly stamped on the bulkhead. I don't know why the DVLA didn't oblige, perhaps the importer didn't mind the 'q' in comparison to the cost of the cert?

Cheers,

Paul

It may well have been issued with a Q plate because it was built up from several different cars. There is a points system with marks for the major components of the car, the shell on its own isn't sufficioent to retain its original identity.

I don't know how effective the data transfer is between different European states and whether the Belgian authorities can see the info the DVLA hold.

Hi,

Just discovered I need to trailer it up to MB Brussels, if they give it a cert then it can be registered.

Thanks for the advice.

Cheers,

Paul

As 312Sprinter says, if it's had a different engine, diff etc, it could end up on a Q plate. So getting it registered in another country may not be a problem.
My Uncle had a nightmare registering a Porsche 914 he took to Portugal as it didn't have the engine on the UK V5.
