Removing blemishes from chrome painted trim

Hey bobby dazzler, interested to hear if the raceglaze hindsight worked? I held off on ordering as I knew wouldn’t have time to apply it or a couple of weeks.
My detailer had a go yesterday, and there was no difference. It’s very very minor on my car but I’m a perfectionist so wanted it just right.

I had something similar on my SL’s bonnet and side fins.

Used baby wipes to rub them a few times and eventually they came out like new.

Or try warm water with concentrated lemon juice .. the water marks is I think limescale

Thanks for the update, glad I didn’t buy it. Thanks to everyone’s input, it’s clear it’s aluminium oxidisation. Better than rust I suppose. I’m thinking I’m going to try wet sanding with 1000 grit sand paper and then applying something like protectaclear. I should get a chance tomorrow so will update my findings.

I had a piece of good condition chrome trim come off another car and it was possibly anodised aluminium with a definite peelable clear sticker on .

Is this discolouration on the clear sticker or oxidised aluminium underneath ?

From what I understand after watching loads of vids using loads of keywords, it is the aluminium underneath. Very much a part of the custom motorbike world, where sparkly aluminium is everything!

A disaster! (Might be a slight exaggeration).

So I grabbed some 1200 grit sand paper and had a gentle go just now in the rain. Cleaned it all first and and slowly sanded an area without too much pressure. I think it has slightly dulled the milky patches, BUT has taken the aluminium finish off! (See picture) so perhaps it’s chrome painted after all?
Booked into dealer tomorrow anyway so will finally show and ask them.

Just to update. My trims still remain blemished! Car was in the dealer last week and I asked the man all staff pointed to and he had no idea. He tried a patch with their preferred 3M t cut style paste with no joy. He saw the bit I had did and thought it might not be aluminium. I looked at a 2018 car in the forecourt and it had the same problem! So basically back to the drawing board.

However, my colleague told me he got all his changed for brand new under warranty! Got to be worth a call I’m thinking.

Guess what I've just tried to clean up?

Amazing what you find when doing a google search. ;)

Anyone any better results?
Think I will just try some polish to at least take the eye off the water marks.

I tried a bit of Autoglym Metal Polish for a couple of minutes, noticeable difference, not perfect but this took me less than two minutes.
Front of trim not been touched, rear half polished.

Early days but chemical damage on aluminium roof bars disappeared on application, and 24 hours later there is no sign of the etchings reappearing.

Watching with interest.
Hopefully the Holy water above is a good repair solution for this issue.

@Bobby Dazzler regarding your roof bars, do you know if this product was applied by hand polishing or machine polishing.

Apologies for what may be a dumb question, but is this "just" a cleaner, or does it (deep) clean and also seal.

If it's "just" a cleaner (or polish), surely it would need a sealing coat afterwards?

I did it personally. I wiped it on with a microfibre and a single pass concealed it which I assumed was too good to be true, so I then gave it a more thorough pass. Still looking good. Will report back when the etching starts to reappear.

It’s a wipe on product, no prep or second stage required. I bought it to protect black plastic trim from UV, but I thought I’d try it on the roof bars expecting it to waste a minute of my life, and was stunned that it made a visible difference immediately.

I’ve tried a few products but none so far have even made a temporary difference. I suspect this is temporary but even if it must be reapplied after every wash then I could live with that. The bottle only cost 8.50 (and would do the bars many times), and it literally only takes 2 minutes in total.
