Renault take legal action v Nelson Piquet

With a possible 14 teams on the 2010 grid and with each engine supplier only allowed to supply 3 teams, are there enough engines to go around if Renault drop out?

Mercedes, Ferrari, Toyota, BMW(?), Renault(?)

I believe Cosworth will supply engines to the new Lotus team.

As far as I know BMW are out of it next year so I guess wont be supplying any engines either.

Lotus were certainly testing a Cosworth engine that revved to 22,000 rpm but if I remember correctly there is a rev limit on this years engines? 20,000 rings a bell. Not sure if this is the same for 2010 though, could be a competitive package depending on chassis.

It makes the shenanigans that went on with Mclaren last year (and this) seem rather petty in comparison....at least Mclaren did not make such a blatant attempt to change the outcome of a race (and a championship). Also have to remember that Renault effectively put a lot of people in danger....other drivers, their own driver, marshalls etc. ( assuming that the allegations are true)

Incidentally, how did they tell Piquet to crash....I thought that all communications over the radio are over public channels and can be heard by anyone?

So how did they tell him to crash? That bit I don't understand?

They had told him before the race in a meeting, that thats what what they wanted him to do.

I think we might all be missing something here: Briatore and Symonds have left the team. Renault are not going to present any evidence. They can't, can they? If the two people allegedly involved have left, how can Renault present any evidence apart from telemetry and engineers who say they know nothing?

I don't see that the FIA has any power to compel Briatore and Symonds to appear before them. So Renault may argue that they know nothing and are not culpable / not responsible

Without any corroborating evidence I would think Piquet's statement looks pretty strange. All it amounts to is "I crashed deliberately - but I am blaming someone else"

If Briatore and Symonds couldnt convince their own managers of their innocence, then its pretty much a given that they couldnt convince the WMSC. After all, Mosley has already stated that "something very unusual" showed up in the telemetry. I think Renault , as others has suggested, realise that the end result , if they wish to stay in F1, is that they have to eject those deemed culpable to be seen to show contrition. All that remains is for the WMSC to decide the level of fine imposed. $50 mio sounds about right.

A fine of $50 Million would be saying...."What you did by asking your driver to deliberately crash was half as serious as Mclaren allegedly undertaking a bit of industrial espionage"

I'd say deliberately asking a driver to crash to alter the outcome of a race is automatic expulsion from the sport.

The only reason Mclaren weren't expelled and were fined $100 Million instead was expulsion or exclusion for two years would have closed the company and caused the loss of 1500 jobs. (That's Max's explanation not mine).

On that basis, the only consideration here is what will happen to the 700 or so Renault F1 employees.....

I wouldn't be surprised to see Renaults withdrawal (at the end of the season) as a result of this fiasco, which makes the decision the FIA are required to make a little easier.

Exit one scallywag and enter another. I wonder if Tom Walkinshaw would buy the Renault team and bring back the Arrows name to F1?

Renault announced today that they have started criminal proceedings against former driver Nelson Piquet and his father, the three-time world champion of the same name, relating to allegations that Piquet deliberately crashed in last year's Singapore Grand Prix. Renault are claiming that Piquets Junior and Senior have made false allegations relating to the matter and that they attempted to blackmail the team into allowing Piquet to retain his drive for the remainder of 2009. And you thought McLaren had problems.

I have a question: is this still F1? I think not. It lost it's touch...

Briatore got him involved in Benetton in the 90s didn't he?
