Retrofitting Digi TV (W220)

I'm sure Malcolm will sort you out.

I would be surprised to see RCA connectors on the rear of automotive units. I think the digital tuner would replace this unit or connect to one of the two AUX inputs?

I was expecting to see this:

I believe the digi tuner retofit requires piggy backing the new tuner on to the back of the existing analogue.

Yep, I know Malcolm will have some top guidance on this.

I do not recognize the rear of that, but as he say it does sport 2 Aux inputs as does mine. I have the RCA x 2 these must be activated on Star

One of those plugs must be the aux inputs. I think I must need some kind of converter to give me the RCA connectivity.

There is the option of selecting AV1 and AV2 from the comand head unit. (Haven't actually tried selecting one of them yet, so don't know if they will need to be activated via Star.)

So need to determine if there's some kind of adaptor available for the back of my analogue tuner.

  (That's me, being surprised)

OK, so what are they for and how does the digital tuner fit? With or in place of the original tuner?

What's what for? The Aux inputs? For connecting external devices like DVD players and tuners etc. (Is that what you were asking?)

According to WIS, the official MB digi tuner connects to one of thoes AV inputs on the analogue tuner.

But I'm thinking of using (Malcolm's suggestion) a domestic digi box and connecting it to the analogue tuner.

I just can figure out how to connect it up!!

What's the RCA connectors for?

They're the AUX inputs.
Looking at the picture in Malcolm's post it looks like you've got red for audio right, white for audio left and yellow for video. And you've got this twice, so two individual inputs.

It's just like the composite connections you have on the back of your sky box or vid camera or video recorder etc.

Different AUX inputs from the first tuner you showed (link in first post). I assumed the AUX inputs were the larger multi-block connectors on the left of the unit.

Well that's the bit I'm unsure of.
Before I had a look at the tuner in my car, I was expecting to see the six RCA connectors (as in the second link and Malcolm's pic).

But when I found my tuner is actually like that of the first link, I am unable to determine how to add a digi tuner.
Those larger multiblock connectors must be the AUX inputs somehow, but I can't see how.

OK this is what I know.
You can use a tuner with the command AUX with one of the devices that Hugh put up.

The Digi tuners are only a retro fit that plug into the existing analogue tuners.
The MB WIS is wrong and I got a red nose over this where WIS states the the analogue is opto coupled, it is not, but Command knows if any plug is removed from this tuner.

OK so the digi tuner goes into the analogue tuner via the phono plugs, this input can only be activated via STAR and the dealer confirmed this as it says on STAR
My Command will not communicate with STAR so I went about it a different way that other people cannot do, so not relevant here.

The wiring diagram in WIS should tell you what those connector's pins are?

Why does your COMAND not talk to STAR Malcolm?

On this subject, I have been considering getting MB to install the retrofit digital tuner on my COMAND. It's fairly expensive, so is there actually any difference between the retrofit tuner and a standard digibox?

Malcolm has suggested the retro fit digi box just goes in the aux connector of the analogue tuner - can someone confirm if that is the case for my car? I assume that my remote control for COMAND then no longer can operate channel changes etc, as I don't see how it would be able to signal that to the box, which in turn would mean having a second remote. With the retro-fit, do they install a control/signalling path to the digi box as well, so that it continues to work with the existing channel operations?

One of the issues I can see is that it takes an off the shelf digital tuner quite some time to scan through all the channels. The analogue tuner in my COMAND keeps continuously an eye out for channels changes as you move around and adjusts its internal channel link on the fly. Does the retro-fit digi box does the same?

I don't think they do. I believe that if you go for the official MB install, you get a new remote with it, so that would probably replace your existing one. Don't think you would need two. (Only assuming here).
