Having recently changed the water pump and viscous coupling on my car I now find that my car sits at around 90c when driving and creeps up on idle and with the aircon on the temp rises even higher. I have now also started to get a distinctive burning smell on occassions now as well. Prior to these part changes my car used to sit at just above 80c and would take alot to get it to 90c before the waterpump went.
The garage who did the work said i neednt to change the cap on the coolant bottle as it was worn and not holding pressure hence the increased temperature but this has not made a difference.
What i want to know is was my car cooler before or is something not right ie faulty waterpump and that i should go back to the garage who did the work?

90c sounds bang on and should be no problem anyway. The stat is an 87c one.

No they didnt change the stat.

My 3-litre M104 usually sits at about 80-85 and rises to about 90-ish when idling on warm days.

No they didnt change the stat.

That was false economy considering they had to remove it to swap to new pump location.

If you are worried I would check that no air locks are present in system, as so easily done when filling coolant too fast.

Mine sits at 90/95 on a run and creeps up to 100 in traffic, I've flushed the system, had the rad taken out and inspected and flushed, replaced the stat, replaced the coolant and had the AC overhauled. I've got aftermarket AC which I think causes some of the hot running as I have only 1 auxilliary fan and I understand that my rad is for a non AC car and the vents below the bumper are solid rather than open....

Having said all that, I have been advised by various Indies that this is nothing to worry about.
