Rust - Sport coupe 2004.

Rust, on the rocker panels just before the rear wheel.
In between the rubber strip between 2 panels and around it.
Its fairly severe.

Does anyone have a dis assembly diagram please?
I can make some plans from then....

Perhaps telling the assembled wisdom the model type would help?
 
Looks likely to be a W203.

The Sport Coupe is the little hatchback based on the 203 platform , my sister had one
 
Thank you Peeps for replying to my query.
It is a CL203 sport coupe, w203.706, Made in 2004. Pano sunroof, An OM611 engine which is 500 miles shy of 200K.
New gearbox conductor plate and bushing, 4 injectors done. etc......All by me in the last 10 years.
A lovely car.

So. I guess the plastic sill is held on below with expanding wheel arch 7mm pins. Also an end cap either end. Simple enough I am thinking, so once that panel is removed the whole rusty inner sill is accessible to clean up.

I have probably oversimplified the job. It is about 10 years of decay.

Can I still drive locally with the trim removed?
It will take a few days to rotary wire brush and treat the rust. I do hope there are no holes......

Please fellow Mercedes lovers, kick me off with some pointers to cure the rust and save the gracious old lady and I from the Sport Coupe Blues.

Sure is an old car and capable of another 50 to 100k if looked after.

So was it the Kompressor models that didn't rust? I dont think its got an OM611 engine. Its been very reilable for me. Great mpg.

Tony, nice 750. I had the 250 as a kid. lovely bike and much tamer than the RD's and LC'ss

They all rust regardless of the engine

Everything is fixable but is it cost effective is the question?
 
Any minute now someone will post on here 'they were all galvanised, the rust must be from a previous repair !' 🤣🤣

It's up to you , just don't break the bank getting it repaired . If there is rust there , you will find it elsewhere.

The only way to get rid of rust completely if you intend to paint the surface is to cut it out back to sound bare metal and weld in new metal. You can slow it down with the various rust converter treatments (Kurust is one), but it always comes back. Eventually you get tired of doing it and give up...

Hammerite/Smoothrite and the like are quite effective in holding rust at bay for a time, but unless the shade exactly matches the colour of your car, it won't look too good...

Greasing rusty brake pipes to prevent them getting worse is fine, providing they are basically sound, though you will have to keep doing it to preserve the integrity of the coating, but you can't paint over grease, or Waxoyl, or any of the other sealing treatments that work by preventing moisture and air getting in.

Having it sorted professionally will give a more lasting repair, but it will cost a lot more.

I'm quite happy to attack it with a rotary wire brush or grinding disc. I suppose if there are holes it will have to go to the body shop as I wouldn't know if the rot was structural.
Get it done properly with new welded metal and a decent paint job to last me out.

I shall quietly retire for the evening and ponder.

Best to remove the plastic panel and see what is revealed ; I'd be concerned about the jacking point .

Possibly worth at that point having a chat with a friendly MOT tester as rust within a certain distance of a structural point ( the jacking point ) can be a failure .

There may be repair sections available ; other option is , if you can find someone breaking one of these with that area is sound , go along with your angle grinder and cut out what you need from the donor car .
