S-Class W222 New Battery Registration

Would be interesting to know the reason for a new main battery? Are you sure your problem is not the stop/start battery?

What is the MY of this car?

AMG/VLRA batteries do not need the old-fashioned breather but they often have an emergency breather. It is supposed to stay closed through out the life of the battery but opens if the battery "explodes" when failing badly for any reason.
The OP's photo shows a battery made in November 2014, I personally think they should last longer than 5 and a half years but from what I see on this forum that is considered a 'good life' these days. :dk:

Bought the car new in Apr 2014 so the battery is 6 years old now. Although there are no warning lights or low battery sign on the dash but the following symptoms make me think it is on the go:
Resting voltage is 12.2v max
Start / Stop would not turn green
Engine would take longer revs to start
Cranking volts are 9.2v
Should I wait for it to deteriorate a little more till I get any warnings on the dash or should I change it now ??

I would say it's on its last legs and you'd be wise to change it before it lets you down.

Your battery may be a little larger than mine. Go on line to confirm size. From a quick look a quality battery eg Varta or Bosch seems to be £170-£190 for your car.

Like for like Varta: £190, Bosch: £220 and OEM Mercedes battery with a discount is around £247. I may go for the Merc in order to avoid any syncing or venting issues.

Bosch batteries are usually made by Varta, and Mercedes don't make their own batteries so theirs are usually Varta, Bosch or another big player.

What about Exide, I am getting a very good price, like for like Exide battery, around £170. Has anyone used them in the Merc

I've heard from multiple sources that Exide are one of the best so don't think you will go wrong with it.

I prefer OEM personally but that is just a preference.

6 years seems to be the typical life for a battery in a 222 from what I've seen too!

Oops , my bad. That will be week 11 (early March) 2014, so fit's in just right with you getting the car in April , around week 14 +

I changed the 8-year old battery on my S350 (W221) last year - bought an identical Bosch battery to the original from Amazon for £130.

No problems since.

All interesting stuff re stop/start. Had to change my aux battery 18 months ago but the stop start rarely kicks in unless I drive 150 miles or more.
I suspected the main batt may be the cause but while it still starts the car I think I'll live with it..

Probably is the case as there are a few conditions that have to be met in order for the car to be ready to STOP/START.

Certainly the state of both of your batteries has an impact even though the aux one is used for STOP/START.

Having had a new aux battery before I bought my car, and then running on the original battery still, it took a long time for STOP/START to be ready.

Then that battery was replaced but the new one turned out to be a duffer, but that's another story.

But anyway, MB then replaced both batteries under warranty weirdly, even though I only expected them to replace the main battery.

After that, it was STOP/START ready a lot more quickly.

Then Covid happened and I stopped using the car daily but since then, I trickle-charge my main battery when not using the car and charge my aux battery once every 3 months.

The car is always ready to STOP/START very quickly from starting no matter what time of year now.

All the more complicated E and S Class cars (has been the same on my W211 E55, C216 CL and now W222 S500L) are seemingly very fussy about the state of battery charge.

Only VAG cars are so stupid they need to tell if they have got a new battery 😁
Replacement BMW AGM batteries need coding to register the new battery against the ECU.
As the AGM battery ages, the ECU delivers a modified charging voltage and duration - if you pop in a new AGM battery without coding it to the car to recognise the new battery, the car will charge the new battery with an aged battery charging algorithm - which prematurely ages the new replacement battery

You quoted an old message. The very latest MB models now too have the battery change menu in the diagnosis tool but it seems not that critical to omit that at battery change.

How over complicated these cars are. I wouldn't think of half of these things. Eg raising or lowering suspension just to jack up the car!
Makes you wonder what damage you're doing even thinking about tinkering.
