Forum brethren,

My family car searches are leading me towards a S212 E350 CDI. However its seems there are variations of torque outputs, mpg, 0-62, carbon dioxide (hence tax), etc between otherwise very similar models.

Pictures are from (the excellent) AutoTrader iPhone app.

Does anyone have information about when these changes kicked in? Are they just software in nature so could be retro’fitted’? I’ve tried Parker’s and Honest John and they aren’t detailed enough.

Thanks in advance.

Pretty certain it’s down to the switch in gearbox from the 7G to the 7G+ which happened around late 2011/early 2012 iirc.

SPX is absolutely correct - it was the change in the gearbox to the 7G+ (which was a bit smoother than the 7G and coincided with the move to the straight DRL I think) which gave the better CO2/tax/performance. Hence these 7G+ 350cdi had more torque than the 7G cars and more BHP the later facelift cars.

The more powerful engine (265 bhp) was introduced in Sept 2011 (2012 model year).Gearbox was also the improved 7G+, plus stop/start. More power, less emissions, better MPG and lower road fund licence cost.

A 2014 MY 350 will have 246 bhp, and more importantly, a Euro 6 diesel engine.

Mmm, interesting, so I presume mine is the all of the above,
November 2011 model
:)

I think you will find that the Facelift 2014 models have a lower road fund licence too, as the emissions are lower.

The very last models before the S213 had the 9G auto box which improved economy. I think this was 2014 Model Year.

I'd say the 265bhp version is the one to go for as has the 7G+ auto but doesn't need AdBlue.

Great information, thank you all very much.

Post 2014s are a bit beyond what I’m willing to pay at the moment but it does help that I know to look for late 2011 or newer straight DRL cars.

I’m guessing the updated gearbox is just that, not simply software that could be applied to an older gearbox?

The 7g and 7g+ gearboxes are not simply 'software', I THINK all stop/start are 7g+.

The 265 engines are also quite different, numerous changes made including pistons, fuel injection pressure (can't recall if injectors changed), dpf regeneration parameters etc. Sufficient for engine to have a slightly different code, OM642LS, IIRC.

In my experience the difference between the 7G and 7G+ is massive - the 7G is quite a jerky ‘box and not particularly frugal whereas the 7G+ is silky smooth and I could comfortably achieve 50+mpg on a run in the 350 CDI.

Just to add that the stop start on the 7g+ wasn’t there until later in the cycle before the facelift. I had 2013 of the 7g+ 265bhp cars and it didn’t have stop/start. It was a very reliable car too.

Just to confirm that my previous E class 350cdi cabriolet (265 bhp) was registered in September 2011 (61 reg) and had the stop/start

My s212 E350 is November 2011, 7G+, 265bhp, straight DRL's etc. but NO stop/start. I notice 'Code B03 ECO stop/start function' is crossed out on the Oasis report.

This is definitely confusing!

With apologies if this has been covered before, but there seems to be (at least?) the following flavours of E350 CDI in W212/S212 guise.
231 bhp, 7G Gearbox
265 bhp, 7G Gearbox
265 bhp, 7G+ Gearbox

Then there are other factors like the CO2 being different, stop/start and more colour used in the cluster display.

I think I'm probably answering my own question by saying choose the newest vehicle in my price bracket, which would seem to suggest very late 2011 and newer.

I can foresee the AutoTrader filters getting a good workout in refining my search...

Around late 2010 to early 2012 there were a plethora of crossover changes that are very confusing so try not to rely too much on a specific date of manufacture and take each car on its own merits.

Am I right to assume that the Euro6 only came out in the facelift?
