S212 tailgate groaning noise

Anyone else had this? A groaning noise from the tailgate when opening or shutting - more pronounced when shutting. I've tried lubricating the strut pivots and also the strut shafts, sometimes it shuts up for a while but always comes back. Is it likely to be the struts or would I be wasting money replacing them, only to find it was something else?

Haven’t had this, but might also be worth a spray of lubricant on the hinges of the tailgate and also the rod that pushes the tailgate open - beside the left hand hinge. Might not make any difference but cheaper than replacing the struts?

I have it on my S205, but only when opening. I lubricated the hinges but the noise remains. I'll try the rod that opens the tailgate.
