sometimes when driving about in london the satnav suddenley "jumps" and thinks its going on a paralell street to the one i am actually on..

now i've taken it to mb for them to look at this issuse a couple of times, and now they recon buying the newest satnav dvd would correct this issue?

to me it sounds like a load of bull, could it be right?

I think you probably are right in your assesment, but if they are that confident then they should sell you one at a huge discount because the present disc (bought from MB) isn't fit for the purpose. And if that doesn't cure it you should get a full refund

What disk are you currently using and in what car/year?

Absolute ******** - unless the old DVD had the streets 30ft to the left of where they are?

Your Satnav is getting a poor signal, and at some point the software has to make a call about where you are. My TomTom (iPhone) does it too, you'd think that in a toss-up where 3 seconds ago I was on the M6 it would pick the M6, but no, quite often I'm apparently doing more than 69mph down a residential street that parallels the M6.

Get them to check the GPS antenna, but I guess it's external?

Edited to add - the only posible way a new DVD could fix this is if it also contains a firmware update for the unit itself, which alters how it calculates your location when the signal is sub-optimal.

Are you surrounded by tall buildings at the time? The kind that might partially block satellite signals and give your satnav some false readings?
If this is the cause then it seems unlikelyto me that a software update will cure what's basically a hardware problem.

The disks do include S/W updates. I agree with you though on this one, depending on which disk he has. If its V9 or v9.1 its worth changing it.

its a 2006 model (supplied dec 2005 if it matters) c class with dvd based comand (comand aps?)

i think the dvd is the one supplied with the car, dont know myslef but the dealer was talking about version 4xxx if in not mistaken

his explanation was that it updates the software in the unit itself, so it looks at more sattelites hence it would be more accurate if i update

still i cant imagine the merc satnav was that bad back then (not that long ago really). because my standalone cheap satnav from the same year(ish) works fine

version 4 is seriously out of date. Version 11 is the most current and there have been a number of firmware updates along the way (incl TMC).

Get the latest disc :)

There is an element of truth in what the dealer has said in that it does update the S/W and maybe there were some significant bugs in V4. there certainly were in V9 and 9.1!

How many satellites is the unit seeing when it is apparently off course?

how would i check that?

thanks

Yes.

I have a limited number of newer disks than yours which you are welcome to try before buying the latest. I'll happily lend you a Version 8 disk if you like.

Check the satellite reception first though. Press MAP, then select one of the soft keys on the side of the screen. Press Display select Map then set it to 'Current location' this will display the number of satellites at the bottom of the screen.

As Whitenemesis says, but If you have ETA displayed, you can change it over from settings :)
