Hi everybody,

After not keeping up with Chip, Graphics card and motherboard specs for a few years, I need updating on the latest hot products!

Used to say that a well speced PC could kick the @rse of any of these new fangled game box toys:D Is this still true??

If so, what would you buy for the ultimate gaming PC?? (this week:mad: )

Cheers!

Are you setting yourself a budget and will this specification include monitor, soundcard and speakers?

John the curious

Just for fun John, no budget limit!!!!
My son enjoys doing this sort of thing but he is out tonight. What about soundcard, and speakers, are they part of this interesting build?

John

Theres no point anymore... To keep up with the lates and greatest in the GPU world you have to spend serious money multiple times a year and then you'll still be fighting with game compatibility issues.

Just get a chipped Xbox/PS2 or 3/whatever and save your money.

Over clocked super cooled (vapochill) P4 3.8 can get over 5Ghz, Nice Western Raptor Hard Drive & Hyperx Kingston Ram DDR2, ultra Fast

Or buy one off the shelf like this? The Omen Elemental

When my son built mine we looked at that manufacturer and they are really expensive for what they are, but as Diesel Commander is on a 'Money No Object' quest then they do make an excellent system:D :D

John

Thanks for that, but how do they perform compared with the latest game box, i.e. graphics resolution, speed etc??

Are they really worth spending that sort of money when you can get an XBox for a tenth of the price??

Hmmm. Chipped you say?

What's that about then, and what does it do?

Bypasses copy protection.

Officially: Allows you to run imported games from other regions.
Unofficially: Allows you to play downloaded games, copied games and watch DVDs from any region.

Chips cost less than a tenner unistalled, but most rogues will charge up to a hundred including installation.

Good advice. Go see an XBox 360 running.

Sure, there are machines that will run games better, but look at the cost.

One of the reasons for my post, saw an XBox in PC world the other day, running some combat aircraft type sim and got to say thought it looked fantastic. Could a PC replicate that for the money??

Console vs. PC

Depends what you want to play

Core2Duo SLI board and a couple of nVidia 7900GTX's

When you're bored with the gaming you can use it for wordprocessing!

Off the shelf, expense no object - why not see what you can get built for you

Does it really make a difference what games you play?? Is for example Medal of Honour better on a PC then a console?? And if it is, for what price??

:-) They are tempting. I had a 360 for a while, but in the end didn't really play it much. Impressive machine. I sold it, recovering most of the initial outlay. I still have a PS2 with full Gran Tursimo library and DFP wheel, but it hasn't even been turned on in over a year.

A PC could match it, not for the money though. Another bonus for the console is that less potential hardware combinations on the platform usually results in more reliable software.

Pound for pound I firmly believe the console will win hands down from a purely gaming point of view, but is that all you want?

A PC can offer so much more, I am typing this message on my PC whilst Win Amp is blaring out music, I can receive e-mails, carry out research...... The list is endless, plus of course I could play games, flight simulators etc etc. It is very much up to the individual.

I recently downloaded the DarkStar One demo onto my PC, can this be done with a gaming console?

Lots of people have bought gaming consoles, they are clearly very popular and it is a case of whatever floats your boat!!

Regards,
John

You are missing the point John, everything you say apart from gaming can be done on a doggy old windows 98 pc.

If you want to run the latest games on a PC it requires almost continuous expensive hardware updates in order to keep up with the gaming requirements.

....Or buy a console and get up to 5 years use before having to upgrade it. And yes, on a chipped console you wount be needing to pay for games either as you can download them and burn them onto a CD using a minimum spec PC.

There really is very little to justify a gaming PC nowadays (and I never thought I'd be saying that).
