On the 23rd I got an e-mail purporting to be related to a remittance payment to be made on the same day with an attachment showing the details. Looked suspect so I left it until the 24th when I could check my bank account for a payment. No payment so went to delete the e-mail and couldn't and can't find it (including a search of 'deleted' items lest I'd deleted it and forgotten). No sign of it. Seems to have self-deleted - first I've seen of that. Has anyone seen the like? Today, as I remembered the first two letters of the e-mail address it came from I typed them into the search box and the complete address appeared. But it cannot find an e-mail from it on my lap-top. Perplexing to say the least!

Chances are that there's a corruption somewhere in your mailbox, preventing the search function from finding the email that you are looking for, BUT self-deleting emails do exist:

It's just that I don't think that a spammer will bother.....

It should have been where I found it in the inbox - but it vanished.
Different from how it describes the recipients view. No further link was supplied and the text showed clearly that it was about remittance advice and the attachment had a BACS icon.

Scammer not spammer. Their intention was for me to open the attachment - pretty common. But for its disappearing act.

Could there have been complaints about it to your mail provider and they deleted it from all systems? Not even sure if that's possible?

I didn't complain and no one else could have.
I found the senders e-mail address and e-mailed them (on Saturday) saying I'd inadvertently deleted their e-mail and could they resend it. No reply (I'm not expecting one) but no pingback as undeliverable so a valid e-mail address.

I wish the emails I receive at least once a day telling me that I’ve won a prize from B&Q would self-destruct. Before they reach my inbox!

Unfortunately, if it is a scam then emailing them (or any type of interaction such as clicking links) makes your email address much more valuable to criminals as they know the mailbox is active and the user is willing to engage.

It sounds like you may have opened an attachment. If it was a dodgy email then that file could have contained some malicious code which may have deleted the email from your inbox.

Hopefully it’s all innocent.

Which mail platform do you use? The likes of Google filter a lot of the blatant spam out for you.

I didn't open the attachment - that's what they wanted.

Never is with scammers. There's been another three (different e-mails for different addresses) since that one.

Spam gets filtered alright - it's the scammy stuff that get through. All pretty routine but for this self-deleting one.

I use Apple Mail on my iPad and Mac. Lots gets filtered out by my mail servers, but lots manages to bypass the filters.

When I was on Windows I used to be able to block the domain names from which most of the junk/spam arrived. But I can’t see how to do that now.

I have used the Thunderbird mail client for many years which, by default, does not show remote content, usually email's graphically-based text and pictures, so the sender does not know that an email has been opened until you decide whether to allow it to download this remote content. There is usually enough information in the basic email to decide whether or not the email is wanted, without having to download the remote content. It also has a built-in spam filter which learns your preferences and diverts those emails straight to your spam folder.
