I am in process of selling the ML and want to retain the reg no. What is the best (read, hassle free) way to proceed? Do I just apply online to retain the reg and await a V5 with the new reg? Or, do I sell it with the
current reg and apply later to retain the reg? The buyer is a friend and I don't want to cause him any
trouble. Is it possible to retain reg, obtain new reg and give details of new owner all at the same time? The ML is taxed until the end of this month. Am I right in thinking that you don't get a refund for
part of a month? Advice will be greatly appreciated.

This is what I did:

Placed the private plate on retention, waited for the new V5, then put the old plates back on the car. This took around a week.

Sold the car, bought new one.

Took the private plate off retention, waited for the new V5, then put the private plates on the new car. Again, this took around a week.

I don't see the advantage of selling the car to your friend with the private plate, then asking your friend to transfer the private plate to your new car afterwards?

Me too. Can be done online now too, which speeds things up.

If you put it on retention online the new V5 and retention certificate take about 3 days to arrive.

I think you will only get a refund for every full
Month you have left on your tax

I put a plate on the wife's car recently...did it all online in a few minutes and was instantly sent the certificate that allows you to get the plates made. Downloaded this, printed, took it to the plate maker and put the plates on the car. All done in the same day.

We picked up our new car on Friday, currently on Private Plates but we are looking at getting more normal ones and perhaps selling the current ones.

often wondered about this since the dvla offices shut.

if you transfer the private plate to retention, then they put the original plate back on the car?

what happens with the tax and insurance situation then? oh and the mot cert. they all with have your personal plate on them. the 1st time you go out on the road, anpr camera's will be going nuts.
