Good Evening All,

I am selling my car shortly, and need to take my private number plate off the vehicle.

I can apply to put it on retention, but assume that i need to send the V5 off to be updated? Any ideas how long this process takes? Am i able to sell the car in the mean time? Or have to wait for the V5 to come back?

Or is there a better way to do this all?

Thanks in advance :)

Vishal

Do it online, (online service is only open 7am - 7pm)
Service unavailable

You don’t need to send off the old V5, it took 3 days for me when I did it.

Yes i plan to :)

Can only be done between 7am-7pm

So you apply to take it off, and put the old plates back on once DVLA confirm the process is complete?

What happens with the V5 then? As it has my private plate on it?

Yes, spot on. When you do it online they will immediately authorise you to fit the old plates back.

You just destroy your old V5, a new one will arrive for the car and also you will receive a retention certificate separately. There’s an £80 fee by the way.

Sounds good.....

Can i request for the plate to be taken off, and then keep the private plate on until the v5 comes?

No when it’s done online it will inform you to get the plates swapped as a matter of urgency.
